Does anybody have words of wisdom on wide/long travel front end kits for 700 SRX? I've got Pioneer's rear long travel in mine now, but to get the handling and hook up I've had to set the suspension too tight for my 165lb liking. Maybe my set up is wrong, front ski spring preload is maxed, center spring is loose (track suspended) rear spring preload is pretty tight also. Without rider, the rear of the tracks rests 1 1/5" off the ground, IS THAT NORMAL? Running picked 121 Predator, control rods, trail port, and the usual performance mods shy of a big bore. Also, Pioneer's front kit has the Kayaba shocks, are Ohlins or Floats worth the money?

Pioneer kayabas will be custom valved and probably outperform others (unless also revalved). A forum member also offers a wide front end kit but i cant remember his name.

Scott. Aka betheviper is the member that sells the front end kits.

I have a Pioneer wide front end kit in my 2001 SRX I am also running Viper trailing arms and spindles and Viper style Ohlins up front.
The rear is a Viper skid with an Ohlin shock also. This is a night and day difference over the stock SRX setup. A buddy of mine has a mint stock 2002 and the difference is very clear when you ride the stocker then jump on mine. Not as nice as my APEX but still a better set-up. BETHEVIPER sells the front shock mounts that allow the Viper shocks.

It doesn't matter what you do to an srx they are not gonna ride like any of the newer sleds.. Nor are they supposed to. They are made for flat trails and lakes. Corner to corner on a flat trail these sleds straight rock. The best thing you can do is leave the suspension heights stock and upgrade your shocks. You start changing the geometry of the snowmobile and you mess with it's handling ability. If you want a sled for the bumps buy a new one

^^^ not necessarily true. Changing suspensions, geometrys, and riding position on these proaction sleds have gotten people some impressive results at a fraction of the cost of a brand new sled.

What are the differences in the Viper front end parts? Do they give you more travel, wider stance, different steering geometry? Also how does the skid differ from the SRX style? The wife has outlawed a new Apex so where is my money best spent to improve the ride quality of the SRX I dearly love and going to be riding for a while?

The limiter straps are on the loose/long side, maybe run up 25% of the possible adjustment range.

To Ford Dealer: The wider front stance provides better cornering. As far as the Viper trailing arms and spindles I am not 100% certain except I was told they are stronger and a slightly better angle. The Viper spec front shocks offer more travel. The Viper skid offers more travel. I would agree to a point that my Apex GT with a few mods handles better all around, but my SRX as it is now modified is 10X better than it was stock. To this day my first choice for riding "Tug Hill" is the SRX since I can push it harder. When we do the Quebec 1500 mile tour I take the Apex although the SRX did the Quebec 1500 from 2001 to 2006 without any issues.

You can't tell me 8-10 inches of travel will
Compare with the new sleds in the whoops and beaten down trails.. Sorry bud I'm not buying what your selling

No but then you long travel the front end and swap in a good skid, then you go from there. I see your new to the site. Look around and see some member sled builds. Of couse a new sled can outperform but when things get custom there is no limit.

Because I'm new to the site means nothing about my knowledge of snowmobiles.. Raising the travel length of your shocks a few inches will add a little bit to ride quality but will also hurt your cornering and handling in the process.. Exactly what my point was in the first post

True. Corner to corner not much compares to a stock srx. Adding travel is a trade off but widening the front end helps with stability. This is something i dont care much for and have even removed my sway bar.

Which is why going to the same width as an SXR, Viper or Venture is important. That and running more sag which brings the ride height back to within 1" of a stock SRX. Bump steer on the SRX was horrible to begin with and widening doesn't make it make it any better but no worse either.

I prefer the low-slung rider position which is why I bought my SRX in the first place. Adding travel while widening the ski stance hasn't changed the handling.

Your mileage may very.

My buddy threw a viper skid in his and srx and also lost mph on the top end.. Not worth the trade off for me considering 90% of my riding is done on the lake
