I bought a used 89 exciter that the secondary clutch exploded on the previous owner and messed up a lot of stuff. The previous owner put another secondary on it but from another post I put on here I think its from a 91+ exciter II. The clutch has "88 R 00" stamped on both sides and the helix has 8U701 on it with a black spring. Does anyone know if this secondary is off a exciter II? The previous owner didn't say.

88r is from an Exciter II or 94 Vmax. 8U7 I believe is from an SRV, I do not know what the angle is though. I know you had questions about your primary clutch on another post, do you in fact have an Exciter II primary clutch? If not your set up will not work very well with that secondary.
The secondary spring should be black in color with different color paint swatches on it. Some off the top of my head are pink, white, and yellow blue

I will have to take a closer look at the spring. I have seen pictures out the color swatches you are talking about but this one is all black. I was thinking of just buying a new spring but I wanted to make sure of what I had. I don't know about the primary but I'm pretty sure that's the original. I know it also has a black spring in it. I don't need to much performance out of it since its just a yard machine.

I suppose the right way to fix it would be to get a newer primary to match the newer secondary or find a used secondary for a 89 right?

I looked up some part numbers and the 8U7 helix is listed for the SRV and the 89 exciter. I think I finally figured out what the previous owner did. The secondary exploded at around 4200 miles because the speedo cable, belt shield, hood and frame where all damaged. Than he must have found an exciter II secondary but for some reason put the 89 helix in it and was running the thinner 89 belt. What a mess!!

Yeah, you see cobbled up messes for sale quite a bit. You really have to know what you are looking at these days because flippers and wannabe mechanics are everywhere.
The primary spring should have color swatches on it too. The paint they used isnt very durable and wipes off pretty easily so its no surprise that there is no color on them.
