Hello, picked up an 98 vmax 700 this year that was sitting for a while. The sled runs great, but my husband noticed 3 oil drops on the plywood we park the sled on.
He looked it all over after it was just shut off, and noticed small oil bubbles leaking from an approximately inch wide area between the lower and upper case around where the starter is bolted. (Crank case)
He took it for another ride and it was still doing it but didn't see any drops of oil on the ground this time.
Our question is,will it hurt anything other than going through a bit more oil? All 3 plugs look good. Maybe a dumb question, but Didn't know if it would make it run lean or hurt anything??
Thanks in advance!

Id say there was definitely a potential for a lean condition with a leak between the two halves of the crankcase.

OK thanks. We were afraid of that. It looks like it has been doing it a while because old oil was also caked all over the starter and the sled sat 3 years without use.
It may be a bad idea , but my husband was thinking of trying to turn 2 of the lower case bolts in the area just slightly to see if he can tighten it a little. He was also going to put Rtv sealant on the outside and hope for the best.
We put a lot of money in the sled when we bought it recently and unfortunately don't have any more to put in it.

Are you sure it's not just dripping out of the exhaust manifold?

It's very common for oil to leak from the exhaust manifold.
Yes, we weren't sure at first but checked and its all dry around there. That's when we noticed after a ride on it and it was shut off, small bubbles coming from between the 2 cases about an inch wide.

It would be best to split the cases and re-seal them but I suppose you could try and seal it from the outside but I wouldn't use the RTV sealant, you should use something thats resistant to gas and oil.

You will never get the sealant to stick because of the oil. It's going to lean burn down and will cost a lot more if Mickey moused. Split the case, 20dollars or what ever in sealant is alot less than piston jug rings etc
Unfortunately my husband doesn't have the know how to do it. Not sure what we will do.

if you don't fix it right it will cost you a lot latter,

Try tightening the bolts - not too much though. Buy a spray can of brake cleaner and thoroughly clean the area using a clean towel. Leave it sit and then spray it down as many times as it takes until after it sits it is clean and dry and then apply sealer. A small amount of seepage will not be a problem. Some older two strokes that were built with the sealers of the day commonly seeped oil. Chances are, the motor has been apart.
Add: Running a finger up and down over the joint with sealer on it will push sealer into the crack.

I had an old ski doo back in the day that developed a leak between the case halves, I cleaned it up really good like PZ 1 said to do and I used yamabond 4 to seal it. It held up for as long as I had owned the sled. If you do decide to try and seal it up make sure you keep an eye on it to make sure it isn't leaking again.
Sorry guys, I just saw your replies. Thanks for all the advice! That's all it was is a little leak. My husband tried to get to the bolts, nut couldn't get to them even with a swivel. So that's what he did is cleaned it up real good with break cleaner and degreaser and kept pushing sealant where the cases meet. Then put a few more layers on.
He rode it off and on for about 45 min. Until the darn pull cord snapped!
So far it is completely dry and leak free.
We didn't want to pull the motor out because he doesn't have the know how and we already put over $800 dollars in it this year and it bled us dry.
Forgot to mention ,it may be irrelevant but the sled only has 3,300ish miles on it.
