I just picked up a 98 srx700 and the owner told me that when he parked it in his garage back in 2008 that it was fouling plugs after only riding it for a few minutes. it was not always the same plug, change the plugs and ran good then foul a plug. he told me he tested the stator, checked for a rub through on the harness, used a different cdi box still did it. Now I have it and would like to know if any of you had this problem and have any info that would be of great help. I know I need to pull the carbs and clean them and drain the fuel tank too. Thanks

Oil pump is shot. They go to full output/flow when they go bad.

Check spark plug caps
Or the cable is out of adjustment...or the cable guide is not seated correctly somewhere.

Check spark plug caps
x2 after you clean the carbs very well and make sure all the circuits are open, I would ohm out the spark plug boot caps, alot of 98's had bad caps

That is a better place to start. And waaaaaaaaay cheaper. For as cheap as the caps are, I'd change them out reguardless.x2 after you clean the carbs very well and make sure all the circuits are open, I would ohm out the spark plug boot caps, alot of 98's had bad caps

Had this exact issue with my srx700 the thing would eat oil like candy I checked the cable it was stuck open. I then adjusted it woke the sled up and stopped eating oil and plugs. Check the cheap fixes first always lol

Thanks for all the info, I will start to take a look at the oil cable and just replace the caps with some new NGK. TB05EMA

I picked up a 98 SRX 600 with about the exact same story.....with receipts for almost a grand from shops with "briggs & straton" "toro" and other small engine logo's that has very little resemblance to Yamaha, especially PV motor. Guy delivered it claiming it wasn't always same cylinder and no one could figure it out. In a matter of minutes I had it narrowed down to PTO by swapping plug wires around (ONLY OK to do this with 98-99's) and then problem followed. Slapped a new cap on it and WA-LAA...guy was PISSED! 5-600 miles later and hasn't fouled a plug since.
