Frankly, I have a big mess on my hands. Long story short my 2003 Viper Mtn. sat outside for the past year and half or so, with rags jammed into the spark plug holes, exhaust ports and PV ports. If you really want the back story I'll share it but for the sake of brevity and not dwelling in the past this is where I'm at; There is significant rust on the piston rings visible through the exhaust ports. I'm assuming they are like that all the way around. Since its in this state I have not tried to hand rotate the crank for fear of scoring the cylinders and/or causing further damage (if that's even possible). So far I've sprayed everything I can with fogging oil. I haven't pulled the head or top end yet to really confirm what the full extent of the top end damage is. Obviously the other concerns lie with the condition of the bearings and other surfaces inside the crank case.
While admitting that this happened is very e-embarrassing, I can take the virtual shame because this is uncharted territory for me. I can't afford the risk of wasting even more money because I'm embarrassed and not willing to asking questions. I'm looking for advice from the experts on whether this is something I can tear into and salvage or that I should cut my losses and part it out because its a can of worms. I can post pictures if necessary or requested. I would love for this thing to breath fire again.
In advance, your help is appreciated.
Humbly,
Andy

Imo. It definatly needs to come apart only way to see what's bad and what's salvageable if anything
Why was it sitting like that in the first place? Id put her back together and let'er rip. Either you rebuild it now, later, or you may be lucky. The rust you saw cant be that bad unless the hood was off to. Spray some PB Blaster in there and try to work it the next day. Keep posting, I am interested. At least make sure a mouse didn't find a new home.
I'd buy it right now if you didn't live 400 miles away(at least). Id like to see some pics of the rust and whole thing. Maybe pull a head or 2 for a better view.

Run it, you've got nothing to lose. As mentioned spray some penetrating oil in the cylinders and let sit overnight, the fogging oil you already sprayed is probably enough. Rock the primary back and forth to see if the rings are free. Once she's free and turning over get some new gas in it and fire that baby up.
I had an old Polaris that sat at my camp for 10 years unused. Couple years ago I told my cousin he could have it, so we dumped some fresh gas in an amazingly got it started. His kids have been riding it since.

Viper has ONE head......for the cost of a head gasket I would pull the head off. At the least you could shop vac the corrosion out of the cylinders and clean it up a lot better than just run it and force that crud out of the motor.
