So after buying my 1997 VMAX 700 Triple with 997 miles on it, 2 weeks ago. I've heard nothing except people talking about the middle cylinder problems.... So after a quick search, I'm under the impression that the problem comes from the heat and lack of cooling to the middle cylinder..
So I come from the diesel power world and I am starting to think of some things to fix this problem. If this is in fact the problem, what everyone's opinion on running a water meth setup? My other thought it making a small stainless steal cage for the motor and putting little holes in it with a co2 injection. We use this to spray co2 to cool down intercoolers for my boost on diesels.
Anyone have any input?

i have never heard of red head triples having cooling problems. i know ski doos did, yamaha is basically the only company who actually succeeded in building a reliable triple. are you running a rear exchanger? they make a big difference stabilizing coolant temps.

I've never heard of the redhead triple having any cooling issues, I've had mine for about 15 years and never had a problem. It was the vipers that had the cooling issues.

That was an issue with the Vipers and there are several fixes. They have a totally different triple motor in them.

Polaris trips (purple heads)@ the same age have center hole problems. Not red heads.

Pheww. You guys are life savors!!! After hearing stories about "the middle cylinder", I was moments away from putting it on Craigslist!! And yes, they all ride Artic cats or Polaris's. I have a bunch of friends that ride sleds. But for some reason I'm the only one that has a yamaha.. Not sure why that is, but I actually like my yamaha.
Is there anything that the VMAX 700 triples are known for that I should watch out for?

They are known for pulling Cats & Poos home. I get a lot of shit for riding Yamaha, but who's the one does all the pulling? Me & my Yamaha! I got lots of pictures to prove it.

I really don't get doo people. They think their sleds are the best even if their sleds have a life expectancy of 10000 km. Yamaha i believe puts more money and time in their r+d. That's why they run their platforms longer than the competition. 23000km on my srx is proof

Haven't you herd!?! The red heads run forever!! Seriously though, some have said this is one of the best engines yamaha ever produced. Very very reliable. They don't really NEED anything, but a few things that come to mind, from researching and experience.
-make sure to thoroughly clean carbs EVERY year... Preseason maintenance.
-inspect the recoil/starter ring. (part number 8CH-15723-00) It's the one that bolts to the flywheel. After time they can develop hairline cracks or corrode and literally fly apart taking the recoil/stator/mag side case out. Those three bolts also need to be lock-tited
-few forum members have experienced a case where piece(s) of aluminum reed petal stops broke off- inspect
-water pump shaft/seal- keep an eye on coolant levels. If you notice deviations in norm, check weep hole
You're sled has such few miles, I'm sure she's pretty cherry.

2x on those reed stoppers. I have found 8 crack stoppers across my 2 sleds... Scary stuff.

Yes, the reed stoppers, how could I forget. After 12000 plus miles, I had one break off and make the motor go BOOM. In all fairness to my old 700 redhead, it made it back to the truck before it went BOOM! So I can say it never left me stranded.
