gas tank rubber grommet?? 91 SRV

I want to change the pickup filter.
But I am concerned with removing the rubber grommet. The grommet has 2 little springs wrapped around it to seal it, and I am betting they break from the rust.

If they break, can I wrap mechanics wire around it?

yes, but i would use plastic zip ties if the springs break they will work better, just pull gently with pliers to set them, will apply more pressure then mechanics wire will.
 
The clamps do not normally break, but if they do I would think they are still available from Yamaha and it would be best to use those.
