Literally just sanded and primed left 1/3rd of hood. Had some bad scratches like someone tipped it. New decals on the way. Just got sick of using touch-up paint all the time. No good pics of before but a ok pic below. Thats the reason my pics are always the right side. Looks like someone rolled bad at one time, had dealer fix, and did this on next ride.
Must have been a pretty bad earlier roll because handle bar mount is welded to post, its a strong weld but looks like crap.

Welded bar mount may have had nothing to do with crash, they were known for breaking....especially with bar risers. May have caused the crash when it broke......

What all are you replacing for decals?About the only ones available that I've been able to find are the strobes and a couple of the others, the SRX letters themselves have been discontinued.

I just looked on port yamahs site and a couple other yamaha sites and they do still have the SRX decals for the side for the 2002, the two little strobes and the warning decals have been discontinued.

There is no after pics yet because its not there yet but put the color on and clearcoat tonight. 4 coats each. Most scratches sanded out but used bondo 5 areas. Turned out pretty good for rattle cans. I found yamahasportsplaza.com has just about everything for these. The srx and strobe with powervalve in it are the ones I ordered for this job. I did order others that were just missing (little yami emblem on nose and tunnel decals from ebay). I will take a few pics tomorrow after masking is off. Color match looks perfect with 4 coats but we'll see after unmasked. The lines where old and new paint come together will be hidden either under a decal or on a body line. At least thats what I was shooting for. I can wet sand in 5 days and rub it out after that but no decals can be put on for at least 2 weeks. Knowing me, I'll have a heat gun on it everyday to speed up the solvent flashing. This is the areosol kit from color rite for a 2000 srx but I think all years were the same. They only go back to 2000. This sled is actually a 98 with 02 decals. The paint is expensive but the closest paint I can find from menards is Rustoleom cobalt blue metalic for like $4 a can. I used that mixed with some other semigloss blue(cant remember) for bellypan. This yami stuff is $33 a can. I am not experienced enough to buy in bulk and use my spray gun but I do for other things like suspension ect.
Oh yeah, the other decals I got are the pro-traction ones for trailing arms which were white and rusty like bad surface prep but that white was some of the hardest paint I ever removed.
Other cosmetic work I've done is polish tunnel like a mirror, replace the gauge pod, windshield, paint all front end components except springs, made hood screens out of my sons old grill covers from a silverado. Not much mechanical work, put in 96 more studs, replaced 6 idler wheels and repacked others, changed rear suspension settings, and a few more things. STILL waiting for the clutching parts. Will be here this week, maybe monday. Still have to dial in front suspension. Then get the arctic cat clutch crisis handled and set that one up. I only put 4 miles on that one so I'm sure I will find a ton of things to do.

One thing I wish I would have tried was since I had to replace gauge pod anyway was to get an 02 one and get the dual bulb headlight but wasnt sure if pod would mount to hood or headlight to hood.

OK. Unmasked today, looks good maybe a tad darker but well see after rubbed out and rest of hood is covered in dust.

Paint job looks nice, hopefully the color matches well after rubbing it out.

Dual bulb pod and headlight setup mount fine on the 98 hood. Wiring harness is different of course, and the 98 stator doesn't have enough output to run the two headlight bulbs, unless replaced with lower wattage bulbs. There are other options for installing a dual bulb headlight setup on single bulb sleds, many posts on here to reference if you're so inclined to do the conversion.

It's weird that the 02 SRX decals are still available but Yamaha discontinued the others.I'd like to see them allow someone to reproduce the older decals as a complete set to help those of us that like to keep the factory look to our sleds.

I talked to an Ebay seller a while back that makes reproduction decals. I bought some decals for my 1990 Yamaha yz250WR, you really can't notice a difference between those and the originals. I saw that they sell decal kits of the 1980 exciter 440, I think the complete kit was less than $175. Anyways...I asked them if they make any for the newer srx's, they said if i sent them a hood they could make them and they would pay the shipping fees, that way they would have a pattern so they could make others. Here is the link to their exciter decals. http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-1980-EXCITER-440-EX440-HOOD-DECAL-GRAPHIC-SET-/360383317463?hash=item53e88505d7&vxp=mtr

Man, wish I would have known that those pieces would fit before I bought New gauge pod. I mean new from yami. Maybe a stator for 02 would fit or HID kit as they use less current then halogen(so I'm told).
I can find almost any decal within reason or part. One of the hardest part I had to find was a NOS speedo for my 77 John Deere. They only went to 80mph and all the aftermarket ones go to 100. Of course as soon as I put an aftermarket one in, a NOS one showed up on ebay but like $120 buy it now.
What srx decal cant you find? Did not work on sleds at all today except washing all the dust off, paint still soft. Also I had no hood screens when I bought it and made my own after I convinced my son that his silverado would overheat with the grill covers on so he took them off and a little cutting, check out my hood screens in the earlier pics. I like them better then the stock ones which would have cost $250 new. I really do think that truck would have overheated if AC was on, not trying to con him.

Final polishing done and decals applied. No wax yet. Never mind the registration decal, I thought I put it in a safe place but I found it stuck to the bottom of a box.
I think it turned out ok for my first "real" sled hood repair. Probably too soon but oh well. Learned a lot too.
