Hi I just got this sled 3200 miles pretty good shape but will run for a bit will overheat coolant will steam out the cap light will come on how do I bleed the coolant should I take the head off what does a bad head gasket look like please help I just want to ride this sled!

under the seat there is a bleed bolt(at the end of tunnel)It is part of the rear exchanger.Run motor to operating temp, raise back end of sled a little and then remove bleed bolt. You can vary the throttle up and down a bit to get the circulation of coolant moving more. When there is a steady stream of coolant coming out, then all the air bubbles should be gone, replace bolt. Now it may take some time before you get there.Make sure your coolant level is up as well.
Question..are your exchangers warm through out?? Does the exchanger on RS running board cooler then the LS running board? This will indicate that there is air in the system..Now if all this checks out ok,then I would say your next step is checking out the water pump.To see if the impeller is damaged or turning even..bigger job then bleeding system.

I wont try and rain on the parade its just I dont hardly ever find that bleeding the cooling system makes the sled not overheat anymore, mainly because they will pretty much move the air out on thier own, the redhead motors dont even have a thermostat.

Go ahead and try it because its the least amount of work, hopefully its just low on coolant. if the head gasket is blown it will either ingest antifreeze and smoke badly, spark plugs look wet and shiny or external leak from cylinder head.

I have fixed plenty of redhead engines that the crank gear slips on the crank and thus doesnt turn the waterpump impellar, slipping it making the sled run hot, hopefully your lucky and thats not it, report back, and let us know.

I don't think yamaha is as technologically advanced as I thought a piece like a water pump shaft that's made of aluminum if my sled needs something like this I think I'll go back to cat or doo or pooh I thought redhead tripples were so bulletproof I see a lot of threads on here about people with trouble with thier yammys I want to give her a chance. Thanks

my redhead is bullet proof..put it thru everything and keeps on purring, never a breakdown yet and it is already turning 14 years old..try that on any of the other brand sled. There is no perfect sled. But you have to focus on the ones that really have the least problems overall.I will stay with Yamaha for life myself..well built products.

I work on all sleds, you think cat is better....lol not... by the amount that comes in broke. skidoo isnt far behind. The cats like to leak the waterpump and rust up all the bearings, and leaks into the crankcase so its even more expensive to repair...go to a cat or ski doo forum, your gonna find troubles as well and more of them.
Nothing is fool proof, mostly from the lack of maintence and general taking care of it. Sorry ,but the yamahas require the least amount of work on them to ride everytime you go out, they are a better machine.

BTW- the waterpump shaft is NOT made of aluminum, its steel. The impellar is aluminum as it is on other brands.

good luck!

I'm sorry I meant steel shaft and aluminum impeller anyway I just want to get this sled running right so its bullet proof like all yours I always seem to guybuy sledds from guys who don't know a nut from a bolt if you invest 1000s of dollars in something do your friggging maintenance Ill get this figured out with a modicum of help thanks all

Who in the WI area can do this work? My sled is really old with over 10k miles and wonder if in the future seasons who could properly rebuild my motor. Thanks Mr. Viper
