Hi folks I haven't been around much the last few years any way I am working on a buddy srx and it just will not run for any more then 3or 4 seconds it starts and quits . When it quits it just like shutting the key off sometimes it will backfire .I checked all the wiring for any bare wires all looks good. I am thinking its the stator. what do you think?

I would look at the load control relay first

what one is the load control relay ?Thanks

Its a relay on the left foot well near the CDI. It diverts all power to ignition during start up then powers up headlights etc. There was a few threads about an updated version I believe and some times just switching HI/LOW beam on head light will make it run as is. Search it up for better info and maybe some pics.

I was having a similar problem. My 00 would start then usually shut off within 2 seconds. I ran around the sled a couple times trying to fix it. Checked this site, which was helpful, doing general searches on the internet, and downloaded a repair manual. I found an article stating that as the sled gets older the stator becomes weaker, duh, and doesn't provide enough power for the electrical system during initial start-up which had advised to start the SRX WITH the headlight beam in the HIGH position. Yamaha had a "quick" fix for this but doesn't offer the relay and wiring it for it. I didn't have anymore start-up issues while having the head light on high. Needless to say I got lucky and found a close to new stator and solved my problem.

the load control relay is the white one, the headlight relay is the blue one. i guess i go about a differnt way of finding a problem. never was into just throwing parts at a sled, so unless you just want to spend a couple hundred on a stator i always like to find out what the problem is. The load control relay is able to be removed and it deletes the wiring of the sled out of the equation, it will let the ign system work alone, if the sled still stalls then yes, it would be power related like the stator, if it runs fines then theres an issue elsewhere with something shorted out in either the light system, meters or wiring.
I have seen sleds have that problem that someone installed 80/100watt bulbs in, the stator can not supply enough power for the ign and the lights. That one took a few times to figure out what the problem was, who checks headlight bulb wattage....lol

Thanks for all the info everyone !! I will bypass the relay and see what happens.

Oh yes, I forgot to add that I replaced the load control relay which inevitably did nothing, Checked whole wire harness from front to back, fixed all rub throughs and moved wires out that ran under the engine, tested all relays and sensors and the only thing that didnt test within spec was the stator which is a pretty simple and straight forward test. Maybe it was a combo of both, not totally sure, but my problem ended when I replaced with a stronger stator. Here a small tid bit that surprised me. I was talking to some old electricians and they had told me when they had found a weak stator in their small engines all they had done was RECHARGE the core of the stator no matter the condition. Now i am skeptical about that but others have said the same. I havent tried it but supposedly all you have to do it connect the stator wires, After disconnecting from sled, to a 12v battery, or whatever the electrical system runs on, for 1 - 2 min NO MORE and Voila!! good as new. Like i said i am skeptical about trying that, which i am going to with my old spare but i think that would save some well earned sleding time and more throttle to play with :-)
