I'm in the process of changing cranks on an 89 SRV & want to take the oil pump gear off in order to replace the inner seal on the PTO end. I assume I'll use a Clamp and a press to get the gear off but was wondering ?
1. Is their a raised stop on the crank end when pressing the gear back on so you know where to stop or ?
2. Should I put something like Loc tight Red on the mating surface W/the crank when reinstalling the gear ?
Any thoughts or experienced input would be appreciated... MMR

I have pulled the gear many times.
There is no raised step to tell when to stop. I just measure the distance from the end of the shaft to the face of the pump gear so I know how far to press it back on.
The gear comes off fairly easily with a small clam shell puller like this http://www.harborfreight.com/large-bearing-separator-3979.html
The gear is press fit so there is no lock-tite.
Although it is ideally done with a hydraulic press I have installed several by simply using a large diameter deep socket and tapping it slowly back in place.
I have found that heating the gear up 300 to 400 degrees (not red hot) makes it a little easier but I have installed the gear without heating.

I recently did this with my Phazer.
Preheat oven to 425F
Place sprocket on top shelf
Set timer for 45 minutes, does not make metal red hot.
Take sprocket with gloved hands and it drops right on into place, no hammering required on shaft.
Chamfer on sprocket seats on chamfer on shaft.

If you happen to drop the rear skid sometime I am looking for a couple of measurements so I can install an SRV skid in my 81 SS440. I just need the location of the front mounting holes.
