I was cleaning my carbs today and I noticed the air/pilot screw was turned out 1 1/2 turns on 2 carbs and the 3rd carb (closest to chaincase) was only turned out 1 turn. I assume this was done for a reason by the person who owned it before me. Is it normal to lean out that carb? I adjusted it to 1 1/2. Should I leave it as the manual says?

They are always the same. I would put all three to your liking/spec. Someone must have lost count when setting them last cleaning.
That is not an air or pilot screw. It is a fuel screw, and I set them all at 2 turns out

It is a pilot mixture screw. Commonly refered to as a fuel screw.
A good rule of thumb to remember, is if the screw is on the airbox side of the carb slide, it is an air screw. Turning an air screw out adds air, and effectively leans the mixture. If the screw is on the motor side of the carb slide, then it is a fuel screw. Turning a fuel screw out, adds fuel, and enrichens the mixture.
