I had gotten some information off the boards about this sled. I wiegh about 200 my wife is at 100. this is her primary sled my backup. or a sled I let others ride when one is down or we ahve an extra rider. I would like to set it up for a 160 lb rider for the best of both worlds.
Original problem was that it would have trouble in poweder or wet snow. It seemed to be bogging the motor. It would burn belts during initial acceleration.
I had gotten some information from people to move to a dalton 51/43 helix at 70 degrees and in the primary stock wieghts (8dg00 with 3.1 in the tip and 4.5 in the base).
I made the change and had a new belt (8dn) installed.
All was good for the first part fo the day. The sled seemed to run well. Engagement was @ 3500 and it topped out at 8500. But after about 150 miles I used the reverse on the sled and the primary clutch seemed to not engage on the belt.
What happened is that the clutch engaged but the belt only went to about mid hieght on the sheave and then stopped rising. It burned the belt right their. You could see the marks on the sheave and the clutch was smoking hot. At this point engagement was the same 3500 but it would overrev to 9500 if I let it.
After allowing the clutch to cool it would finnally bring the belt back up to the top and run decent but still would run up over 8500 rpms. Sometimes into the 9000K range if I let it.
Any ideas. I need this sled for this coming weekend and thru new years so I am at a loss.
Thanks patrick.

Did not try that but will.
My question though would be why would it work fine the fist 200 miles then go askew after that.
I'm going to check the cap. To be sure that it is not binding on the shaft at engagement.
Are the caps form a 2000 srx the same as the caps from 2002 600 deluxe? My buddy has the srx that is down right now and I could test to see if that is binding and not allowing for a smooth engagement.
I think what might have happend is when you went in reverse maybe the halix got stuck and maybe messed up a guide....hard to say why it would change so much but not enough side load might had let it slip back like that......strange...I am just guessing here

But the gearing for going forward is to high for reverse, and the multi angle only makes it worse. My 99 500 dlx worked fine until the multi angle helix went in. Then reverse was pretty much usless as it just burnt spots in the belt. Maxdlx

Thats weird because I have reverse on both my SX-R 700 and my RX1, they both have multi angled helix and I have not had these problems

Interesting, I was just about to get a 51/43 for my wifes sled, I'll have to take the 52/44 off my sx-r and try it on her sled first and see how well it works with reverse.

Like I said
It is JMO but my 99 worked just fine until I added the multi angle to it. Worked better in forward, sucked in reverse. But I am not a clutch expert, and was alot dumber back then, might have been pilot error. Maxdlx

your rpms were wacky because you burned the belt, plain and simple.
Unless the changes you made to the primary were to run the 8dn belt, you may have problems there, as the 600's use the softer belt I believe, the 8ch I think...
Anyway, I'd put an old belt on, and jack up the rear end. Engage reverse, make sure it goes in and out smoothly, and then try it on the floor, see what happens.
The 8dn belt is quite a bit harder than the 8ch, if your sled came with the 8ch, this could lead to slippage problems.
Hope you get it figured out!

SLED stock is the 8dn belt.
I will replace the cap on the pimary to make sure that the bushing is not binding and preventing the clutch from a clean engagement and the belt 9with a used good one then a new one.
CAP is off another sled and is the same as the one on this sled.
Hope it works for me.

Just looked in the handy dandy parts finder, and the 8dn is stock on that sled. I'm not sure when that changed yet, but it usedta be the 8ch...anyway!
When you hosed the belt, it's probable that some little rubber balls found a home in the works, and are helping things bind up. Clean everything best ya can, and test out that reverse with no load. Good luck!
