My brother has a 98 vmax xtc 600 and we have been having with problems with the thing missing at higher rpms like it was down a cylinder but not all the time. We went for a ride yesterday and the sled finally died on us. Got it running on the trail and found when we pulled the spark plug wire closest to the exhaust the engine wouldn't change tune. Hauled it home and found the 5k resistor was bad so replaced it. Thought great cheap part and we've been chasing the problem since last year. Now the other side is not firing???? Measured the coil and the secondary measures 4.6k and primary measured from .8-1.3 ohm (not sure if meter is accurate that low of ohm measurement, lowest setting is 200 ohm on meter). Put a new 5k resistor on that side also with new plugs all around. Their is spark there but not as bright as other spark plug, it's blue but not a wide spark. The other cylinder was acting the same way, little spark but the boot was bad when measuring it. I'm thinking the coil is bad now but wanted some input. Thank you for your help. Could the cdi box be the problem? Just a thought.

Thought I would share my solution. It was the trigger at the flywheel. Who ever took it apart last didn't put the wires back correctly so it was rubbing on the flywheel and eventually wore through the wire shielding.
Thanks for the help......
