We have been chasing a bogging issue on a 88 Exciter and needs some insight.
Some history on the sled. The following has been addressed on the sled.
- New crank seals
- New top end
- Carbs 320 main, 42.5 pilot. Needle and seats seems to operate correctly. When float is level with carb body it closes, opens when pivots down. Float level per spec in manual. Air screw at 1 turn out.
- Fuel pump seems to operate correctly. No fuel being dumped into crankcase through puffer line to nipple on crankcase.
You can ride the sled around and it runs great. Flat out rips... But once you slow down and want to keep going it bogs until you can get past the bog or get past a certain RPM.
After having the carbs off 5 times and checking the fuel pump we are starting to think it is the clutch. Maybe the secondary is keeping the sled in too tall of a gear. Maybe the belt is worn out?
I'm going to check the belt width spec and pull the secondary off.
The symptoms to me sure seem like fuel / carb but I'm not a snowmobile guy. Now that I'm thinking about it more it sure seems like it might be a clutch issue.
Also, I've noticed that riding in deep powder it bogs even worse especially going slow. The hood has the blockoff plate removed and it allows snow to dump right down on the exhaust.

cooling the pipe off too fast makes it bog too ie snow or steam. really should take apart the clutches and make sure all is moving free and not binding.

You could try hitting the choke when it bogs see if that helps or not.Couple of things I found with my exciter ....the choke will stick from water getting into the cable over time and will cause a bog when warmed up and the left front moter mount are prone to cracking letting the moter shiftback.

Swapped the secondary and that was the problem. I was chasing fuel the whole time. Damn thing was bound up and was keep it in a tall gear. Kinda like trying to leave a stop light in 5th gear on the bike. Doesn't work really well. Ha ha. Put a new belt on to. The one that was on there was at the low end of the spec in the manual. The thing flat out rips. I'll post some go pro footage ripping around in the field by my house. Thanks for the replies
