I recently decided to completley change the rear suspension in my 2003 Rx1. I purchased the sled approximately 10 years as a 121" Rx1. After completely hating the way the sled rode, I slowly progressed to making it a much more rider friendly, fun, more responsive and better handling sled. I started by widing the ski stance. Adding light weight aluminum a-arms that gave me an extra 2 inches of width. This drastically improved the handling. I found that the riding position was also a major issue with this sled. I sat much to low and was unable to stand up during the rougher sections of trail. I solved this issue by adding a Apex seat and tank shroud (which bolted right up) and adding a 2" bar riser, allowing me to keep the stock throttle and brake cable lengths. The next major issue was the flotation of the Rx1 in the deep snow. I called it the 1 ton.....Because it sinks like a 1 ton truck in the snow lol. To address the problem, I originally converted the suspension by adding rail extensions and a tunnel extension. (Hartman Performance Parts) however, the 121" skid was not able to take the abuse of the longer track. I would constantly snap tensioner bolts and cracked the H-Arm on 2 occasions. The solution....a 2008 MXZX SC3 136" aluminum suspension. With minimal tunnel modification, I was able to practically bolt up a full Skidoo suspension. The drop down brackets had to be relocated and flipped to accomodate tunnel width, and the front mounting points had to be moved and redrilled. However, after approximately 1000 miles on the new suspension the Rx1 runs like a dream. I now have the best of both worlds, a great motor, along with a solid suspension with incredible handling. I run a 1.25" Ripsaw 136" track. It gives me adequate hook up on hard packed trails while still allowing me to have some float when playing around in the powder. Perfect for a Ontario rider.
