Buddy rebuilt his 97 600 XT and he mentioned there was a lot of different piston choices and that some were for higher performance versions. I thought they were all about the same, is there a BEST 600? What year and model should I be looking for, if any? Is it correct that these engines are in the 90 hp range stock? Thanks.
1998 if I had to pick. 1997 is the same engine just had piston problems with the originals. I also heard 90 ish horsepower.

I was wondering the same question about the 94-96 600s. Is there a preferred and is there one to stay away from.

Right now for oem Pistons there is just one updated # the 98 8CR forged piston while the 97-99 motor has a better design with triple exhaust ports the intake is way smaller that the 94-96 cylinder 95 600 made 94.5 hp at 7250 rpm I have a fl tilt 95 motor with Aaen twins taper bored carbs and digital RPC ignition makes just under 140 hp at 8450 rpms not bad for a old 600

97 pistons had a problem with ring spin and usually scared the cylinder but that was corrected in 98..
