I have pondering a 2001 sxr 700 for the wife and kids. It doesnt have electric start and it is a good yank to fire it. If i could find a starter kit how difficult is it to install? If i could find a used one , what models would work with the sxr? I have a 1991 phazer 2 would it work?
Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated

I installed electric start on mine and it wasn't bad.. But it isn't a 15 min job either. You have to pull the primary clutch off, and install the starter gear on the back of it with loc tite and proper torque. Then pull exhaust, airbox, carbs, remove motor mount bolts and lift or tip the engine about 5+ inches so you can bolt in the starter. It mounts to the bottom front left of engine if you are sitting on the sled. There is also a harness that includes your starter relay etc needed that plugs into your factory wiring. You have to tap the 2 holes on your chaincase to accept bolts to mount the battery box. Run your ground and positive wires, install primary clutch, align the motor and tighten motor mounts, install belt, exhaust, carbs, airbox and a AGM battery, and you are good to go.
I am sure someone will say they did this in 20 minutes without taking any parts off because thats what people do on forums but to do it right I think thats whats involved.
From start to finish for your fist time it will take you about 4 hours. I can say its worth it!!
Go to http://www.ronniesmailorder.com/fiche_select1.asp?cat=Snowmobiles&mfg=Yamaha and look at the battery box and starter part numbers. I don't think those parts would bolt on. I also don't think the ring gear on back of the primary would match but you can check.

The 01 SX-R 700 also gets the fuse box added to it, just plugs in above the secondary. I've done a few of them, and it can be done without unbolting the engine. Overall, not a bad job and it is nice.

I think it was the back bolt on the starter that gave me fits.. but who knows. If you can do it without moving engine sure saves you lots of time on the intake side of things.
