Hey Guys, I'm new to the whole clutching thing but have been learning on the tech pages and doing some reading. I found that for an SRX 700 01 trail sled, Turk recommends a 52/42 helix. I'm having a little trouble finding that, and I already have a 51/43 helix. My question to you guys is whether or not you think that will work, and should I plan to change out any of the springs or weights to get started? Thanks!

I am not the one to talk to about this but I'll give it a shot. I think you want a 51/45 for the srxs after 2000. That is probably not an OEM helix, the 52/42. That one you have will work but the 51/45 would be better and yes, you gotta get the whole thing tied together. I am new at this clutching also but for the last few months, I've been reading and reading because for some reason, I am having a very hard time understanding it. If I read right, Turk may have passed on a year or 2 ago. That was before I was a member here. I was asking the same question as you a few months ago and was recommended a combo from a very experienced member here and I bought all the components and I never in a million years thought clutching could make that much of a difference, like the motor grew another cylinder! I bought all oem parts. I used the helix you have because mine is a 98 and yamaha still had some bugs to work out until they had the motor more refined. You will need weights, rivets, 2 springs, and a helix. I can repeat what I have seen ppl recommend or you could wait for a more informed person to respond. Whats on it now? Any motor mods? What is the sled going to be used for primarily? Answer those next so members will know what to recommend. I would also replace or at least check the secondary inner sheave bushing while your at it. I have a 98 and I can tell you what mine has for aggressive trail riding and a race or 2 on the lake. I have 8DN 20 weights with 4.5 gram rivets in each hole(The tech section shows some good close ups of the weights) A yellow/white/yellow spring in primary, a 51/43 helix with a green spring wrapped at 70 degrees(I know there is a function to type that symbol). That part got me confused. The clutch has 3 holes labeled 1,2,3 and the helix has 6 I believe. So 70 degrees means spring in hole 1 on clutch and hole 6 on helix. I don't know how much you read in the tech section but 1+6 is 7 * 10 is 70, thats how you get the degrees, add the numbers of what holes the spring is in and multiply by 10.(When I was told this, I actually went to my woodshop and got my angle finder, I wasn't that far in the reading). This setup will work for yours if thats what you want from sled but I am sure someone will have some more insight for you. Best bang for the buck, this clutching. I learned a few thing working on mine tonight. Check out this video of mine after clutching. Watch that speedo. The motor is all stock. Maybe we can help each other out learning this clutching art. I ordered all my parts online at yamaha sports plaza. Where in WI are you?

51/43 will work just fine... check RPM at WOT and reports back.

What's the ideal RPM range? Is it 8300-8500? Or am I confusing that with the SXR?

@Victory2K1 - Thanks for the info. I'll start out with the 51/43 and see what happens. I want to use the sled probably for 80% groomed trails, 15% rough trails, and 5% playing in the powder. It's almost entirely stock now, except for a DG can on it from when I bought it (about a week ago). I plan to upgrade the skid to an SC4, put viper shocks on the front and heighten/widen it, put on handlebar risers and a seat riser, add some wind guards, and put on some better powder skis. It's already got a track in great shape that looks to be a 1" with 96 studs, though I've got to replace a few and may change it to a 144. Other than that, I want to clean and polish everything up on it this off season. I'm located a little north of Stevens Point -- looks like I'm really close to MrSled actually.

Nice, I thought you had a srx. I read your sig wrong as it says sxr. Are you gonna at least try the clutching before the seasons over? I am upgrading my suspension also, my back isn't that great to begin with and this pro-action thing is bad for my back. I will probably loose some speed but at least I won't have to take Oxycodone after every ride. I have just been working on them and not much riding lately. Right now I am setting up a roller clutch for the yammi, if hi-tech would ever fix there website, I could move this along a little faster. I am shooting for 13.5" of rear travel and put the same skid in my wildcat. That thing rides like a dream. It's going to be a little more difficylt for the yamaha but I'll get it done. They were talking about a storm for friday/Saturday but last check, maybe an inch. yay. Just the cold with the frozen snow so extra bumpy. I bought one of those homedics massage chairs from bed bath and beyond and that helps after a ride but no pain meds anymore, at least for now(doctor decided to take a vacation just as I ran out). I don't know, we'll see what this skid does, I just don't want the backend up in the air a mile and don't want the wheelies, I set the wildcat up but still does wheelies. I'll back off the front skid spring almost all the way and see if it affects the handleing. Too sore now. I don't know sxrs very well so don't know what the rpm range is but somewhere in there.

8350 for the 98-99 and 8500 for the 00-02. I'm a couple miles east of stevens point. Let me know if you need any help.

Just an FYI I do have an 01 SRX. I also have an 01 SXR that I'm trying to sell, but this post is regarding the SRX. And thanks guys, it's cool to know there are so many people close by with the same sleds on here!
