Hi !

I have three Yamaha T.S.S. sleds in the family
and since they are basically the same chassi they all have the same design flaws.
They all steer like a pig and need a football field to turn around due to not enough turning angle of the skis.

How to get larger steering angle ? / How to get tighter turning radius ?

* 1990 , Ovation-340 Long
* 1991 , Venture 480-TF
* 1993 , Exciter-II ST

My phazer and summit are sitting side by side in my garage so for grins I compared the steering angle on both and they are nearly identical. I personally don't think it has limited steering lock to lock and the only thing I could think of that would increase it would be to extend the lower tab on the steering column to increase the overall travel of the tie rods, but you'll most likely have interference at the front of the tunnel and also put more stress on the steering column and have more steering effort. Tip that thing and carve, they turn on a dime!

I've noticed that my daughters 96 XT6 has a wider turning radius compared to my sons 99 SX6. Hers has Simmons Gen1s w/ dual 4 inch carbide. His has USI Triple Threats w/ Studboy 6" shaper bars. I would think that the XT6 would turn better, but not so much. I've played w/ the limiter strap too. I don't have an answer either for ya.

They should turn okay if everything is right on them. I have never heard of anyone else complaining of poor steering on those models.

Are you running a lot of studs? The more the track bites, the less the skis will.
Do the skis turn to the same angle each way?
How are the wear rods? If they are wore out, steering will not be good. Are you using carbides? The more carbide, the better, in my book.
Try adjusting the ski pressure. Cinch up the front limiter strap and try setting the rear of the suspension firmer.

It is on hardpacked when the problems shows and when you want to turn around.

1. Are you running a lot of studs ?
2. Do the skis turn to the same angle each way ?
3. How are the wear rods ?
4. Are you using Carbides ?
1. No studs ( Over here in Europe 99% does not use studs ! )
2. On the Venture and Exciter ---> Yes.
On the Ovation ---> No.
3. The wear rods are just fine.
4. Exciter ---> Yes.
Venture and Ovation ---> No.

I've got an Exciter ST as well. No studs, have carbides. The only way I can get that pig to turn is tuck my legs back and lean forward. Doesn't help that I'm 6'2" and prefer to sit my butt at the back of the seat. I mainly sit back until I get into a tight section in the bush.
