After my oil pump failure last weekend on my 97mm I'm in need of a replacement. I used about a gallon of oil to a tank of gas and my cables are not an issue. I have a spare with a bent cable bracket that I "think" is good but I'm weighing my options... It was in spare parts box when I bought the sled. Previous owner said he bent the bracket and just bought a used pump instead of trying to bend arm back.(but that worries me, it was prob using a ton of oil and may be bad) So...may be worth it to just buy a new one that I know is good. I just don't want to go through the hassle of replacing the pump with my spare only to find out it is also bad and have to do it again. A new oem pump is about 300 from port yamaha but I noticed the viper pump is about 100 cheaper. The numbers are almost the same except with the beginning prefix letters are different. (8-ch mountain max) (8-dn for viper). Or I could always pick one off another forum member or fleabay. It seems like used ones go anywhere from 25-80 depending on who's selling.
so couple of questions...
1)Am I over thinking putting a used one on?
a)Do they fail often enough that a used one is just a gamble?
2)will a viper pump work?

Is 97 SX different than 99 or 200 SX-R? I just installed a viper fuel pump on the 2000 SXR 700 and it worked just fine. Only difference is an additional bypass hose over the top of the pump. My air box hit this hose, so I added a new slightly long hose to go around the airbox instead of getting pinched below it. That was just a precation though and may not be necessary. I could feel some tension on the airbox when tightenting the bolt up on top connecting the airbox to the frame. I'll postr a pic later today.
Huh, all the sx-sxr's are the same. I will be interested to see you're pic

He wanted to know if the oil pump would work not the fuel pump. All triple fuel pumps are interchangeable. That does not go the same for the oil pumps. You can use any oil pump from any red head triple though. I ended up getting a brand new one for a mm 700 for 50$.
