[h=2]Ok - been a while - I was here last year a lot when my SRX and Viper needed top ends etc. I do appreciate all the input.[/h]
So - I need some advice on what to do. My SRX had the top end burn down (I did something stupid - my fault) and I replaced 2 jugs and three new pistons rings etc and head. Local mechanic did the work in NH. Well about 100 miles later - I was out riding and she just stopped. Could not pull her over - locked. I feared the worst. We towed her home - next day she starts up! Like nothing happened. I ride about 200 more miles - season ends - she gets set up for a nap. Seemed like some anomaly.
This year - she runs great - I put about 200 more miles on - then boom. She shuts down, same thing as last time. Will not pull. Off to mechanic. One Burned piston, crank shaft is toast. My mechanic says part her out not worth repairing etc etc.
So what could have caused this? Should I try to repair her? Or really just part it out? Best riding in Decades in NH and I am down.

Even if you spend $1500 on her, your won't be able to get something else that's reliable for that kind of money.

Perhaps but I am looking at an 02 SRX w 3500 miles for $2K.....thats the thing. Then old sled for parts....but shelling out the cash etc. Just not thinking clearly I guess at this point. Last week was a doozy - stepson crashed the ZR600 into a tree (he is OK) and clutch went on the Viper, then last day my SRX goes downnnnnn.

What would cause this though? I think it may have something to do with the top end work that was done.....why else would an otherwise normal sled have that type of catastrophic failure?

could be any number of things, wrong jetting in carbs, bad fuel/not enough octane, air leak, bad crankseal, etc. hard to say until it would be all taken apart and looked at.
on another note do you wanna sell it as is? I know someone looking for a srx project. you could go buy the 02 and sell this one.

yea I may - what do you think it would be worth as it is? New Woodys, studded track. Small cracks on nose, little tree rub spots. Top end is recent and only one piston is bad (jug is ok I was told) and pistons are new about 300 miles on them, then of course the crank issue. All stock - everything works besides the obvious. Pic is my avatar. Really tho it was running fantastic prior to this incident. Always Ran 91 and used fuel treatment. Such a shame. No rips in seat all good - adult ridden. Currently in Ossipee NH. I feel like my mechanic did not clean out the bottom after the burndown....

I think a few more detailed pics are needed in the classified section please. What "stupid" thing did you do that burned it down in the first place? I bet I've done worse things to sleds then what you did. Or buy an ebay motor and hope for the best.

oh yea? Did you accidentally put antifreeze in the oil res? and oil in the antifreeze res??? haha yea. I may just replace the bottom end.

I would get the 02 (if funds allow it) Then fix the 01 over the summer. Then you would have 2. I know when funds allow I am going to get another one. They are too sweet and as they keep getting parted out I think they will eventually be worth more money. Just my .02.

never good when they lock up, probley the first time you should of checked what the issue was. by that 02 if ya can, be fine. 3:16 (yammie tony)

No, haven't done that....yet. I set track tension and forgot to tighten the axle bolt/nut and stop nut. Nothing happened though. I did have the track on the tight side though. I will be sure and let you know about my next big boo-boo.

yea I dont know - I have all those parts I am buying and the sled....I can get that 02 for about $1800 but really not ready to put the cash out right now. I will ride the Viper for the time being.
