Hi All,
I'm New to this forum, lots of good info.
I have an 02 SRX that I'm having a small issue with that I couldn't really find in other threads.
When riding, the engine feels flawless, the issue is that from time to time (maybe once a day) when I come to a complete stop and the engine idles down, she just cuts out like I hit the kill switch. Once this happens, I can pull until my arm falls off, with and/or without choke, and she won't budge. Just 3 nights ago, I went for a ride to the store and this time she idled down fine and I hit the kill switch, but when it was time to go, again pulled and pulled with and without choke but the only thing that helped was letting it sit for 10-15 minutes.
If I let it sit for about 15 minutes, she fires right up like nothing ever happened and goes without even a hiccup for the rest of the ride.
I've used some dry gas, eliminated the TORS as a possible source. Good spark in all 3 during this dead period too. I don't remember this happening last season though. I did clean the carbs at the beginning of this season.
Also, this is my second season on my first sled and it appears to burn more gas than I think is reasonable, how would I gauge the burn rate for fuel, what's good and what's bad.
Would like to be able to go on deep rides without the paranoia that she will leave me sit 15 miles from the nearest road...
Thanks for any advice.

sounds like something electrical is going on. When it doesnt start you should pull the plugs and see if they are arching. Then you can rule out if it is a spark issue or not. Wouldnt make sense to be a fuel issue because you can let it sit and it will refire and run okay. report back your findings

I've hooked a spare plug up to each boot during the dead period and spark is fine on all 3.

when you try and restart this warmed up sled are you taking your left hand and barely just cracking the throttle and pull with your right, as these sleds take just a smidge of gas to fire up once warmed up. my kid cant start here will pull and pull, I go over and do what i just typed and it lights off 1st pull, it wont start idling without touching the throttle.

Same ^^
Take your plugs out and check em too. Could be on the verge of being fouled cuz your running rich or using too much oil if you have good spark on the spare plug. If you cleaned your carbs on your own you prob already know that but hey I'll be the guy that asks the "is there gas in it?" question.

I have not tried with just a little bit of throttle although I have tried pulling with a lot with no success.

Also did pull plugs and shined them up before the last incident which was at the gas station arrived with quarter tank and had topped it off.
That's the troubling part, it's not consistent and once running again it's fine, idles smooth and solid power.
Perhaps a clogged idle jet or two?

you can pull on them 50 times and they wont start idling when warm, you need to just barely crack the throttle and they light right off when warmed up. try it youll see something this stupid works like a charm, theres not a clogged jet, or it wouldnt idle at all without the choke.

Have you found that with a lot of srx's? Mine takes 8 pulls to fire up with a messed up recoil that comes out 2 feet before it hooks and stone cold, but once the ol girl is warm I give it a half pull at the most and she roars right back up without any throttle

I got my last one at ACE. Menards has them too.

what mrviper said is common with my trail srx and viper! Try it.
Yeah, if u got clean carbs and good plugs (and gas haha) and all it takes to get er running is a touch of throttle when you're pulling I'd call it a win. Every now and then mine will do that too. Every machine has got a quirk or two, that's what makes it yours. Mrviper, would setting idle a little higher help any?

Thanks for the info on the spring, my srx idles up really high when it's warming up a lot of the time, its gone high enough that itle try to pull the clutch in a tad but with a touch on the throttle it usually goes down, itle idle high when warm aswell, like 2200, selfie does it idle around 1000 or below except when trying to die at warm up

I need to do this technique sometimes but one problem, after I ride and shut it down, I have one shot at this per 2 days because of my back. What ever I all injured with it, its getting worse, I see doc Thursday. Pain meds don't even help anymore. This is not right for someone of my age(43). I won't stop riding until I physically can't. Wow, I teared up typing that!

I will give this a try but for my situation, I'm not seeing much difference between cracking the throttle and giving it half choke. I know these two are functionally different but do provide a little more gas to the engine.
I'll update when I have a developments.

By cracking the throttle and tugging, you're introducing mostly air and barely any fuel. Half choke (or more correctly, enrichment) is only adding more fuel.
Kind of like starting a flooded engine. Holding the thottle open and tugging introduces mostly air because the low air flow rate doesn't draw fuel out of the bowl like it does at high air flow rate.

Every SRX I have owned and the Viper S I had needed the "Throttle Burp" to start when warm. It like magic. Lol

MrViper, thanks for the advice, same thing happened last night and the throttle crack worked like a charm...kudos!!!

I've always had to do this with my viper after it's warm too.
