02 Viper. Last time we had it out was in the UP and it was -8 or so...freshly groomed trail that set up HARD...sled over heated. Got back home and found plugs to be ivory white. Sled has rear head exchanger. I installed an opticool head gasket and changed needles from 3rd groove with 2 shims on the bottom to 4th groove with one shim on top and one on bottom. Today fired it up, 3500' elevation and 35 degrees. Sled idled VERY high and every time I would touch the throttle it would bog and fall on its face...wouldn't move.

Was this increase in jetting too much or do we have something else going on here? When I pulled the heads the pistons showed signs of detonation, but compression test is good.

fuel screws should be at 1.75-2 turns out from lightly seated, if they are then likely you have 1 or more of the following going on

1.) the tors switch is unseated and holding the throttle on, when you gas it it will activate, check the switch its under the idle screw on carb rack, it can come undone if someone trys to lower the throttle down too far and undo the switch. Also the throttle cable needs a bunch of slack, it should not be taunt, it will still open the carbs all the way up even with the htreaded adjuster all the way down.

2.) it has a air leak on the base gasket, depending on how hot it got it moight have warped the head or cylinders, you can usually locate it with carb/brake cleaner and spray around the engine listen to the rpm change.

Well I get the DA of the day award! I pulled the carbs and changed the needle setting, then let my brother re install. Turns out it was the TORS kicking in. He had the throttle cable so tight it was pulling on the throttle cam. I should have known this was what was going on...we had 20 people at the shop wanting ride and I guess I had a brain fart amidst all the chaos! Lesson learned! Thanks for the help Don.

no its a very common issue, i guess i am gonna have to do a how to post a video or pics to help the guys with the throttle cable adjustment, 90% of all the problems with the tors switch is the cable is too tight, dont feel bad your not the only one, very, very common issue guys post about.

glad you fixed it, ride safe!

My TORS started engaging this season, very intermittantly. Plenty of slack, so I assume one of my switches is going bad. Lack of snow and being busy I haven't looked into it yet. I did hear down at the local Yammie shop that if it's too loose it can also cause it to engage? I've ran it pretty loose in the past and never had an issue, has anyone ever seen a cable too loose cause it to engage?

no such thing as too loose of throttle cable and making the switch engage, its not possible.

I think the switch falls out if its too loose. I have a vid that could be posted somewhere of a tors acting up. I originally thought the tors activated would kill the engine, not limp it.

same sleds..SRX running fine, took out a piston and cylinder on my 600 second ride..a ring spun and then caught exhaust port..pissed me off.Got all the parts here to fix, just waiting for warmer days.Doing good myself..retiring eh!!!
