Mechanic said my crank is toast - should I just get a working crank with rods? Or the entire bottom end?

Also - what other years are compatible with the 01 SRX? May make it easier to replace.

Thanks - Sean

sean find what ya need here. 00-01-02 cranks all the same. hell you can find a case here too. this appears to be a good sled. i would rebuild the old girl. 3:16 (yammie tony)

As well as 2000/01/02 SRX cranks, any 700 Viper crankshaft, although lighter and "pork chop" style, will work in the 2000/01/02 SRXs as well.

Thanks guys - now my mechanic says lots of labor for bottom - and that I should just get a good used motor! man - I may just have to move up to a new sled I dont know....

I agree that the labor and parts involved are very high for a 12 year old sled. Many of the guys on this forum are mechanics who are willing to take on an engine replacement project. If you have to pay the hourly at a ----stealership ----it takes all the fun right out of this sport.

Alot less labour to buy a good used motor and swap it. Maybe the same cost in the end but you'll have spare parts. Just a thought. I bet you could find something in the classifieds

I am going to see what shakes out in the next week or so. And I will be riding a new yami demo this weekend.....

I just replaced the crank on my 2003 Viper, and if it wasn't for the issue I had with the rebuilt crank it was a lot of fun. Thank to MrViper700's help, the sled is up and running really nice. I'm going to disagree with your mechanic, most of the work was taking the motor out and putting it back in. The link is below to follow the thread I posted if you're interested. By the way, how does your mechanic know the crank is toast, it's really hard to tell unless there was catastrophic failure?

It also sounds like your looking for an excuse to buy a new sled......I did at the end of last season when my crank exploded. Nothing wrong with this, don't feel guilty at all, but once you have the new one, it might be worth tinkering with your SRX, nice machine.

+1 After the engine is out swapping cranks should be a breeze...might want to find another mechanic...sounds like he might be intimidated by the job???

funny but I have not had a new sled since my first 2000 SRX. I do not want a new one no...just tired of paying mechanics. I really feel like this guy did not clean out the bottom end when I blew the top (he said something about - well I didn't open up the bottom....) and that is what caused the failure. I may need to get a second opinion though. He is an independent - nice guy - used to work at yami shop for years etc.

OK - I am buying a complete sled - it had a top end burn down (01 SRX) - coolant hose busted - so we figure the crank should be ok.
includes a second complete motor 01 (w bad crank) with stator - and 3 new heads and 2 used jugs.

I figure I can take the bottom end out of the engine w bad top end - use that on mine -then sell all the parts....he said he would scope it and check the crank just to be sure.

I think this way I can offset my costs and be OK :-) or just have a bunch of parts - or rebuild this second sled if I want to.
