Is there a trick to pushing the roll pin through a new choke switch? I keep breaking them trying to get the pin in there.

Are you hammering on the pin? If so don't, use pliers to squeeze it in

No hammer I tried using channel locks. I'll try again and be more careful.

I've noticed that the opening on some replacement levers appear wider that the OEM so when you go to squeeze the pin in, your bending the other side of the lever and it breaks.
Try shimming the gap with a match book cover (notched to allow the pin to go through) so that it's supported. Then use pliers to squeeze the pin in.
