After reading what seemed like hundreds of posts on the 97 sx700 backfiring popping and bogging randomly at lower rpms I figured I would post what was wrong with mine. Most replaced stator, this did not fix it for me.
What I did that didnt fix it:
cleaned carbs
checked reeds
sprayed seals to check for leaking
tested plug caps
replaced all three coils
replaced stator
replaced cdi
checked continuity and ground from stator to coils/cdi
bypassed tors
unhooked kill switch
drained entire fuel system and replaced with fresh gas
I was about to start pulling the sled apart to part it out when I figured I would try one last thing.
A wise man once said, always check your grounds...
I spliced into the black wire at the cdi(ground), as well as the coil ground (brown), and ran those 2 wires to a stud on the engine, problem fixed. It was a bad ground all along somewhere in the wire harness.
The windshield starts to buckle in at about 100mph

Over laying the ground would wask an intermittent open circuit quite possibly caused by a bad splice (sealed and not visable) or break in the wire yet covered by the insulation (also not visable).
Neither of which would be seen during a rub through inspection.
Well done sir.
Still would bug me to know where the hot spot is. You kinda cheated ;>)

Very true, however the part of the stator on the 97 sx that charges and sparks the cdi, is completely separate from the part of the stator that powers the lights/gauges and warmers.
the srx is differnet, if you have a rub thru it will affect ignition and lights
on the sxr you can dis-connect half the stator and run the sled in the dark with no lights

What I was trying to say is that the still present issue with the CDI/coil ground circuit is an open rather then a short to ground via rub through... which is what you hard wired.
I'd still try to find it just because if it is an unlikely open due to rub through, other circuits other than ground may become effected... or maybe not.
I've resorted to running and leaving overlays when I was loosing money and had some come back and some that haven't.

Is there such thing as a groundwire kit made for sleds?
