I have a buddy (he wears yellow underwear ) he found a srx 700 for a decent price, but the steering shaft broke just below the flange. Is this an easy fix? I don't want him to buy it and have lots of problems getting it fixed. He has enough of that with skidoo. And I'm also tired of working on yellow junk because i have to help him fix it just to go riding.

hammer in a tight fitting shaft and start welding. NOTE: welding 3" from a vented gas tank is not ideal

Mine is welded also. I read on here it was a common problem on the early ones. I would hate to be the one riding when the handlebars fall off.

i clean out the current shaft, then take a smaller peice of heavy wall tubing and tap it down inside. I drill 2-3 holes thru the original shaft just into the new one you put inside it and then plug weld those up to secure it good so the whole repair is not relying on the single weld at the top when you replace the flange onto the stem. I just remove the seat and gastank off the sled, and then take a old bath towel thats "wet" and lay it over the engine area/fuelpump,etc so nothing gets burned/sparks to the gas.
its about a hour repair to do it all, not bad pretty easy.

Yup, what he said. I broke mine a couple years back and had a friend fix as stated above. While at it we added 2" in length as well. I still have it on my work bench ready to go b/c I bought a new one to be safe. Super easy fix for someone in the know. I would be interested in "paying it forward" and swapping, assuming yours is in good shape and just needs repaired. You would have to pay all shipping though. PM me if interested.
