I'm looking at buying a 98 srx with 4500 miles on it what is the major problems with them.
Wasn't there an issue with the crank and wiring harness?
Was 97 the first year or is it 98.
I currently have a 97 vmax xtc 600 deluxe with 3000 miles.

-Wire rub throughs under motor
-Powervalve cable pull through
-sticky TORS switch

Never heard of a crank problem these are EXTREMELY reliable 2 stroke engines, if not THE most reliable ever built. I Believe 98 was first year for srx. There's a few finicky things to watch for but all and all I don't think there are a lot of sleds that can rival the sx sleds for reliability

There was crank issues on the first year '98s but I think you can run the VIN through a dealer to find if a repair claim had been submitted... provided the engine is the original.

W arm cracking/skid sloppyness

Nothing to steer you away, just ways to run down the price.

The ones that had crank problems would never have made it to 4500 miles without the repair being done. if it runs good now you should be good to go.

okay thanks asking price is $ 2400
Would a 2002 viper be a better choice and do they have the same motor as the srx.

That's a little pricey. Around my area you can pick up 2000-2002's around $1500-$2000. 98-99's around $1000-$1500

Id check to make sure the update was done, but like mentioned it most likely would have went down by now if it wasn't fixed. 02 Viper or 98 srx.......Viper. Buddy just got a pretty nice 02 viper with 3k miles on it for 1600$

so the viper motor is the same good reliable triple?Up here that sled is about $1000 more.
02 viper with 3k miles asking 2800 obo.I will try to get a viper for 2500 then thanks for the input guys.

I think the viper didn't have triple pipes but not sure. The srx had more power stock. I think they have different motors internally. The only chance I had to look under a viper hood, the guy almost closed it on my head so I wouldn't see his secret clutch setup. Thats way off on the asking price but thats all it is, asking. Unless its in Smithsonian condition. If the Viper is sold and your back to the srx, the handlebar mount was known to break off. If it was, make sure it has a nice weld and not snake snot. I have a 98 srx so I would go with the viper and have both. Theres an idea, buy them both!
Oh, that right, everything costs more there. Why?

Lets just say the Viper engine is real close to the Srx but comes with a single pipe instead of triples. They still run good, and still can outrun a lot of machines on longer runs, IMO it does 99% of things better than an SRX minus top end.
