i have recently changed the stator in my buddies 99 sx 600.i have a 98 sx 700 in my shop right now with no spark. the sx 600 wouldnt rev over 5000 rpm, changed the stator, and its running mint.the 700 came in dead, and has no spark at all.the headlight doesnt even light up when i pull it over.ive been reading alot of posts, and it seems that most people end up changing the stator to solve the problem.i also read that sometimes it could be rust on the outside of the flywheel. is it possible that the rust buildup could be causing the stator to burn out prematurely? just a thought ive had.kinda curious what everyone else thinks.every sled i have worked on has rust on the flywheel.ive also read that you could clear coat the flywheel on the three raised portions to keep it from rusting.has anyone done this?, and with what results?im looking foreward for someone to reply to this thread for sure!!!also, lots of belt dust on the inside of the flywheel, could that also be a factor?

i have also read that the pulse coil could be bad, but not the stator. is it possible to change just the pulse coil alone, and not the stator?or should they be changed as a pair?i tested the pulse coil, and its junk in the 98 700, but the stator tested ok.another thing on my mind, i couldnt get the allen head screws out that hold the recoil bracket on,they wouldnt budge, and started to slip on the allen driver, so i had to weld nuts on the screws and they turned out easily after that.just wondering if the flywheel will be o.k. after welding nuts to the screws?

I think flywheel is fine. Of all my stator failures, it was always a short in the winding(low resistance). Pulse coil/pickup coil can be changed by itself(I never did one on my srx). The thing about those(I have never experienced this)is they can test good and still be bad. I never had one go bad, some a little out of range. A stator has to be pretty far out of range for it to fail and temps can make a difference. The stator has 2 separate systems(generally). A low speed coil, a high speed coil,(for ignition) and the lighting/charging coil.
The ignition coils are the 2 wrapped in tape and the wires are as fine as hair, all it takes is a little of the coating to wear off to short one out. All the other coils are the lighting/charging coils, 14-16 gauge wiring so pretty big and more durable. I've heard that rust can affect the pickup coils ability to work but I think it would have to be really rusty and it won't cause a pickup coil to go bad. You shouldn't even have to pull the flywheel to get at the pickup coil, thats what picks up the signals from the metal tabs on flywheel. Just so you know, I never had the flywheel off on my srx so these could be different then what I am describing. I suppose the dust could do some damage but I doubt it. The dead sled doesn't sound like a stator, it sounds more like a wiring issue or bad key/kill switch, or tether switch. Just ohm the stator and pickup coil(I don't know the specs off hand). Then you'll know for sure where to start looking. Sounds like stator isn't even plugged in. Just start testing. I hope this helps. I have no idea how to test a CDI or even if you can. There is some guy that learned how to test and rebuild them and I can't remember who or what forum hes on. I know it isn't here because I never had an electrical issue with CDI. He also wouldn't tell me how to test a CDI. The only way I know is to try a known good one.

i have tested the stator, and the pickup. no ohms reading whatsoever on the pickup, but the stator tested fine.changing the pickup by itself would require cutting the rubber grommet, and the wire sleeve, because the connector wont fit through them, kinda curious if anyone else has done this before.anyone?
