i have a lead on a clean 96 vmax 600 and want to use the motor to build a project exciter or phazer.
i want to beable to go almost anywhere, i want a motor with pretty good low end snap and i heard the 96 wasnt great for that. what is the reason for that? did the 94 and 95 have that good low end power.i know the vmaxs were pretty heavy sleds, does that weight come from this motor? any info on these motors would be hugely appreciated. how hard do you guys think it would be to put one of these motors in a phazer ? ive seen em in an exciter but i think the lighter phazer chassis would be nuts!!!
thanks.

The 600's have decent low end power and are a good, reliable engine. They are about 95 hp which is only about 2hp more than an Exciter SX. You are right about the vmax chassis being heavy and this would be my guess as to why I can out run any vmax 600 on anyone of my exciters.
I dont think throwing a 600 in a phazer chassis would be worth the effort when a 600 will pretty much drop right in to an Exciter chassis. A phazer II weighs around 425 wet and an Exciter is around 500lbs wet. The extra 75 lbs is mostly coolant, motor, and heat exchangers etc which you would need to add on a phazer any way to do this motor swap.

so i rode a 96 vmax 600 2 up long track touring model and it had 0 low end snap do you think the 2 up models are geared or clutched differently?

Its possible?? What kind of shape was the sled in?? Is the clutch and belt in decent shape?? Was it running decent?? Long track = more weight, more drag etc compared to a 121"....

2 ups were actually geared 1 tooth lower. if the one you rode was a dog, it is either clutched wrong, geared wrong, or poorly tuned. in my opinion, that 600 twin was much more snappier than the 570's. i had them all, 87-93(sx) on the ext's and 94-96 on the maxes including an st model from 95. all had low end grunt. like ski packing performance grunt. grassed dragged them, snow dragged them, etc.

i have done a couple of 600 implants into the 570 chassis. easy cross there. skip the pz idea unless you want cooling nightmares. Throttle Junkie nailed it.

snowdad4, when you did your 600 swaps do you use the exciter shafts, chaincase, clutches ect? i have a 700 triple red top that i was also considering putting in the exciter. how hard do you think that would be to fit? would i have to use the 700 shafts , chaincase and clutches if i go that way?

There is a 700 red head in an exciter on you tube and a guy over on vintage sleds is building one, or built one. The biggest issue for the red head swap is the pipe and motor mounts. The 600 twin wouldnt require any other changes besides the wiring harness. Everything would bolt right up. A stock 600 pipe may fit in the chassis or probably any aftermarket single for the EX chassis would work fairly well I would guess.

throttle junkie nailed it on the triple implant. motor mounts and pipe fitment are the challenge. there would be no need in my opinion to change out the drive components. i once stuffed an srx engine into a 95 vmax chassis and the drive system handled the power output well in drag racing applications. not sure how it would have been as a trail rider, but it loved the grass!

i have a real clean 98 600 twin that i would like to use in my exciter. is it possible to put my crank into a 94-96 case and still use everything else from my 98 motor too?

Im pretty sure the cranks would interchange, I believe the cylinders would bolt on, but why would you want to use the newer top end?? I believe the 94-96 had a couple of more ponies.

Upon further review, I didnt realize the cranks were different on the 97 and up 600's. Mainly the pto and mag bearings. The mag side is a different type of bearing, but it may be the same od and have the correct pin location. Its the same deal with the pto side with the addition of an extra ring on the inner bearing. Too bad your in Canada. I have a good 95 600 bottom I could send you, but it would be close to $75 or $100 just for shipping alone.

so my top end will bolt on the 95 bottom for sure? would i have to use my rods? how much would you want for that bottom?
