I'm putting a 144" track in a '98 venture 600. Previously had a 136, therefore if I just move the skid back 4" is that too much, or should I move the skid back the 2.5" like my sxr (has a MPI track extension kit) and get a rail extension.

Just put extensions on the 136. I wouldn't move the whole skid back, you're not going to gain much since you're still on a 136 skid with just more forward approach angle track ahead of the skid. Might increase the possibility of stabbing the track with that much out front of the rails too.

unless that track is cheap, wouldn't bother, the difference on the ground is 4 x 15, there is unmeasurable difference for the work involved. If you want more traction and floatation, go with a 16in x 136, this will give you more floatation under the weight of the sled instead of out the back where there is less weight and will also give about the same as far as lugs engaged. 136 skids engage about 18 lugs to the ground on the flat, a 144 is only going to have another 1 at the back (maybe 2 depending on where the track lands) where there is less weight on it to grab.
I fell for this 144 one escalation that manufacturers were into for a while, In hind site, I should have just used a 136 and called it good. Hope I have saved you some agrivation
