I am new to the site and vintage Yamaha sleds. I am restoring 79 and 81 EX 440's. I got to ride one before all the snow melted and noticed the rear skid is pretty soft. The shock is good but bottoms easily. Is there a shock upgrade available like a coil over that works here ? I did read about the Phazer skid swap but was hoping to stay stock and just replace the shock.
I also noticed the primary clutch and belt ran very hot is this normal? . I checked the engine alignment and it checked out
Lastly. While I have the engine apart I was thinking of milling a couple thou off the heads to bump the compression a bit to give a little more performance and better cold starting. I know from previous experience the OEM's leave a lot on the table as far as performance goes and the easiest way to build in reliability is lower compression. I run 92 anyways so that is not a concern. Anyone done this and or thoughts here please.
Thanks in advance
Cheers !
