SX mufflers

What is the difference in SX and SXR mufflers Yamaha lists 97 by itself ( steel sealing ring instead of doughnut) 98 has a doughnut listed but the muffler is not the same as the 99 and up????? I am trying to trade a Nickel silencer for a stock muffler and dont want to get the wrong one. I have a 2001 SXR.
 

97 didnt use a donut. 98 used a donut, 99+ has an added heatsheild on side but still mounts same as 98. Most aftermarket silencers (except slp) will work with all years.
 
I want to put a stock muffler on my 01. Is the added shield make a big difference?

Ive never heard of anybody having issues without but...i guess it was put there for a reason. I would think in the even of the sled being on its side it would stop the belly pan from bending in and melting on hot muffler.
