I have never used Z max, have heard of it but never tried it. I run Amsoil Interceptor (synthetic) Only issue I am aware of running non-synthetic is you may have to clean valves more often. Theres a few threads on oil, you might be able to findsome one that has ran it before.
Since I've bought my sled new, it has seen nothing but Yamalube. I'll be over 15,000 miles very soon. Never touched the motor yet, compression is down 2-3 lbs from new, and passed a leak down test 2 yrs ago at 13,000 miles. I clean my valves every 3000-4000 miles with minimal carbon build up. Just my .02.

I had similar results with Yamalube, I have 20k miles on my srx and I run a variety of "crap" oil all the time. It takes a whole 10 minutes to check the valves, pull them out every 2k miles and check them... dont buy into the clean valve hype.

yea I figured cleaning the valves just goes along with all the other pre season maintenance. When I bought the oil they sales guy said it actually "cleans" your engine as well and he claims its also smokeless and odorless. I will have to try this myself before I believe it. Its supposed to be a highly refined mineral oil that doesn't break down like all the "crap" oil, but I will try it this season and see how it goes. Im coming off a 99 sx so the motor set up is really the only difference for me. Any suggestions on some things I should take a look at before riding. I have a receipt for carb and valve cleaning also the carbs were synced. the main reason I bought it was because the previous owner too great care of the sled. One thing I did notice when I started the sled is that one of the power valves drips a little oil on to the manifold, is there just a gasket there I have to replace?

Should just be the gasket...if that's where it's dripping from.

I buy Amsoil Interceptor for CHEAPER than yamalube.....hype or not. I have a buddy that SWEARS by Wal*Marts private brand $10 (or less) a gallon stuff.
There is a gasket for the pv towers and you can try changing them but I've been through this time and again and the cure for this that I've found is to use a little skim of silicon on each side of the gasket.Do this and you'll never have to clean up the drool from the PV's again.I know this might seem contradictory because there is a gasket there but I've replaced gaskets before and still had leaks until I started using silicon.
Oil is a topic that could occupy a lot of pages but the best advise I've been given is run what you want,synthetic or petroleum based,there's arguments to be made for both it's your sled and if your getting a good quality oil at a decent price run it.Synthetic seem to be a little friendlier to the PV's as far as carbon buildup,but again you'll get guys saying they have great luck with petro based oil.

You may also have a bad PV shaft seal.
Yes I never thought about adding that to my earlier reply,it could very well be a bad seal.Also check and make sure the shafts of the powervalves are smooth and clear of and buildup,I had one with a scratch down the side and a new seal didn't make any difference.

Yea I think ill pull the bad pv and do that then just to save some head aches. I have a set of rear shocks from a 2002 viper, would these be a little softer than the stock srx shocks? I know these sleds are buck boards and the trails around me aren't always maintained the best, what do you guys think?
I haven't trail rode very many Vipers but I believe they are valved softer so yes if a softer ride is what your going for then your headed in the right direction.

i know guys who ride the piss out of there sleds and they stay very clean with any old oil! if you ride a 2 stoke like its supposed to be ridden, they tend to stay clean. yes syn oils will help keep them looking good but its not necessary

X2 sounds like the seal to me, not the gasket. When you have a bad seal the oil drips out the weep-hole in the powervalve housing and drips on the exhaust.The Viper shocks will increase your skid travel regardless of thier valving so they are an improvement that many use to turn the short travel SRX skid to a longer travel Viper. That said, you'll also need longer transfer rods.
This upgrade will raise the rear a bit depending on the amount of sag. Then, you're faced with raising the front suspension to compliment the increased travel of the rear. Some guys swap from left to right and flip the front shock brackets to give you another inch of ride height but no increase in front susp travel.
BTV may be able to help with converting your SRX front susp to a Viper with custom shock brackets that except Viper front shocks. You'll still have the shorter SRX spindles but travel will increase as well as ride height.
IMO - this upgrade isn't complete unless you also use longer radius and tie rods to take full advantage of the increased travel of the Viper shocks resulting in an increase in ski stance. My '01 SRX is set up this way.
Search "long travel SRX" and you'll find reading for days.

Amsoil Dominator syn. I use to use that crap yamalube it was bad for gummimg up the valves switched to the amsoil and never a issue again. I have buddies that run klotz and it also works well.
