Old drive belt was getting worn so I put new spare in 2001 SX 700R. Idles great on start up no noise. When I come to a stop after riding the belt is chirping. Can push down on it at idle into clutch some more and change the chirping pitch. I see black fine belt soot on clutch. Do you think my primary is not releasing or opening back up all the way to not engage into the belt? Idle around 1800 per spec.let it sit , re start and idles without noise....

take a washer out of the belt deflection bolts on the backside of the secondary

secondary comes off so easily, just pull it so you have working room

secondary is on with a 14mm head bolt. put on the brake and take the bolt out with the washer and spacer still on. the clutch isnt press fitted on so it will just slide off

what are the purpose of them washers? do they need to be on there i hear about people saying to take them off on here all the time do they need to be on there? my 2 machines seem to be doing fine right now with them on

the ends of those bolts wear down with time so removing a washer will take up the lost space

It looks like I May have two washers under each bolt. They look to be very thin. By removing them I assume my belt will ride a little lower in the secondary thus a little looser so it won't try to engage at idle- and grab at the belt?

The clutch doesnt try to engage. Its just caused by the clutch rubbing tightly against the belt. Youl notice that the ridges on the inside of the belt may have some wear on them because of this. Take out the washers and see what happens. I had to buy new bolts for mine but they had over 20000km on them at the time.
Its my understanding they control the belt height on the secondary clutch. You want the top of the belt pretty even with the top of the secondary clutch. If you buy the same belt all the time you never have to mess with it ideally. Like the 89l belt is a little narrower so may need washers so the sheave is closer together causing the belt to ride higher add washer belt will ride lower. The 89dn belt is a little wider and my need to remove washer to make sheave wider. Fewer or no washers the longer the bolt is. So if you put on a little wider belt your deflection will be off and the belt will squeal. Hope this helps.
Does it sound like this? I only notice it when coming off the throttle and/or braking. Just trying to figure out if we have the same problem ('04 SXVenom).

heres a very bad case.
Well finally got to it. Took the one and only washer out from behind bolts on backside of secondary and it worked! Further testing will be required :-)

The whole point of those washers (or lack of them) is to adjust your belt deflection. Let's assume your clutch center to center and offset are correct (first thing to check by the way). Now you need to check belt deflection (there are write-ups already in the TY tech section so I'm not going to go into detail on this). So your belt deflection is good on your new belt. Now as the belt wears it gets narrower therefore it sits lower in the secondary clutch. This makes it act like it's taking off in a higher gear. So to counter this you add washers as the belt wears (until the wear limit of the belt of course). Adding washers brings the secondary sheaves closer together (in it's static state) which raises the height of the belt in the secondary.
