hey guys I just found this site and have to say, I like it. Lots of good knowledgeable people. Anyway, I'm trying to sell my 1998 V-max 600 Twin on craigslist and am not having much luck. I got it for a steal and put tons of parts and money into it to make it almost perfect because I wanted to keep it forever. Well.......that all changed once I rode a Polaris iqr 600 race sled. My question is, why can't I sell my sled for a fair price!!? I have $1300 into it plus my time and I'm struggling to get even $900 for it. Am I doing something wrong? Why are people low balling me with $500 and $750 offers, and if that wasn't annoying enough, people only text and they want to negotiate before even looking at what they're buying! Any opinions would be great. Thanks ahead of time guys and gals!

it's the nature of the beast. Everyone wants the best for less. 2 years ago we picked up my wife's sled (1999 sx vmax ) for $1500. Clean as a whistle. Yes it seemed like a lot for the sled but as clean as it was it was worth it.
 
You have it advertised it asking for serious offers. That means different things to different people. I would advertise it with a set price with that price being a little more than I would actually sell it for. Everyone wants to negotiate a little.
 
Welcome to the site...I looked over your add and didn't see your asking price. Without that you are opening yourself up to crazy offers. You may find better success putting in your asking price and also ask for best reasonable offers in person...that's no guarantee that you won't still get low-ballers though...maybe just not as many.

Also, some are afraid of a "newly rebuilt" engine. Top end rebuilds can be a bit scary as many times fragments find their way to the crank at a later time.

I didn't see the miles in your add and that would be pertinent info for a top-dollar offer. Without that most will assume it has high miles even though it may not. Basically you are being presented sight unseen parts sled offers. You may want to take the part out asking for offers and push hard to get them to your house so you can build sled value in person as you are the one with significant investment into this sled and can tell your story better than anyone..

Yep, add a price, and that will help. How is your snow there? Sleds up in the northwoods in my state go for more than down here by Milwaukee due to better snow conditions typically up north than down here.
 
Thanks for your thoughts. Its not the end of the world but I'm just shocked at how hard this sled has been to sell compared to some I've sold that can't even hold a candle to this vmax as far as condition. The mileage was 4300 or so when I got it and did all the work and it has roughly 4700 now I believe. What would be a reasonable price to list it for and what does everyone think this sled is worth after negotiations with a potential buyer?
 
Couple of factors to keep in mind. According to statistics new sled sales are up. Some say due to last season being a decent snowfall and guys that had ben holding of on upgrading went ahead and pulled the trigger this fall (as you did) This flooded the market with entry level or slightly above entry level used sleds, lowered demand = lowering actual saleable value. Now I am going to go off on my opinion train of thought. Your 98 twin is a narrow run on the engine (year wise) I believe 94-96 were one version, 97-99 was another (that don't interchange) Seems 00 600's were triples. Again in my opinion most Yamaha "guys" prefer the triple due to its near bullet proof track record, power and fuel mileage. Honestly when I look at an add for any sled I completely loose interest when I see TWIN unless its cheap enough to buy for the interchangeable parts for my triple powered sleds. Go to KBB.com, it has a snowmobile link. Enter your zip code, will offer retail and trade in values for your sled. Price should be some where in between.
 
Another thing, I have bought and sold more than a fair amount of stuff on good ole Craigslist. It seems to me 85% of the folks that shop Craigslist (or at least 85% of them that respond to my adds) are a complete waste of time. Will ask ALL the same questions that add clearly provides, they get all in a hurry to chisel you on the price and often don't read the add it seems. Where you? Mileage? Run okay? Hows the track? Whats wrong with it? Why are you selling it? ALL provided in every add I have ever run!
 
I looked on KBB as mentioned above. Trade in was $800 and retail just under $1300 in excellent condition. Thank you everyone who replied. I'm going to redo the add tomorrow and include a lot of the tips.
 
Keep in mind that it is about the end of snowmobile selling season. Few trail sleds are sold after January unless it is a very good deal. The price has to go down to move a sled in late winter, and sometimes even then nobody wants them. So if you don't get rid of it quick, you will probably be keeping it until the fall.

well that depends on location, our season just gets rolling here at this time
