01 sxr700 overheating and idles high

Just got out for the first time this year speed runs great except it idles at about 2500 to 3000 rpm. Also had the temp light come on multiple times. I parked on a hill and bled the coolant, there was some air in the system but the light would keep flashing 3 times. One of the wires to the plug looks like its hanging on by 2 strands of copper, could this be my people or could the sensor have gone bad? I know the water pump is working. Any help is greatly appreciated

There is a stop screw on top of the carb rack, turn it out to slow the idle down. This 01 sxr should flash the temp light 3 times upon start up. Anything after that is a code for something wrong.

Yeah it flashes 3 times upon start which I figured was normal. But the it will flash again 3 times then stop then flash again. I need to check one of the wires on the plug it's possibly a bad connection. I just have to see what the intervals are between flashes. Thanks for your help roundyroy1 I will keep you posted on what I find out
 
If you didn't know how to turn the idle down, I highly doubt you cleaned the cleaned the carbs properly. When you re-installed the carb cables, you probably didn't leave any slack in the cable, and it's too tight. Turning the idle screw wont help. Try to get that idle down, but high idle and overheating screams running lean too me.
 
OK I'll have to admit I was a little tired from plowing when I posted that and wasn't really thinking of where the idle screw was haha. Turned it down to where it should be. Here's a video of the light flashing. If I'm reading the chart right on the link roundyroy1 sent me i think it's discontinuity of the variable resistor ( thumb warmer). Sounds like you may have an air leak for the high idle but it shouldn't overheat that fast. Are you riding it? Or are you saying its overheating just sitting there. They will eventually all overheat if left idling with no snow on the coolers to melt. Are the coolers getting warm? She may have gotten a bubble that needs to be burped from summer storage. Just idling with an air leak shouldn't heat it up enought to cause a noticeable temp problem. The idle hang is the give away to the air leak assuming everything else is correct.

Its not over heating Backwoods MMAX i found that out. It did have some air in the system i parked it on a hill and cracked the bleeder screw on the thermostat housing and let it out. I'm getting it to throw a code right after start up engine totally cold. It flashes 3 times the theres a little break and it repeats. My sled does that too. The code for the thumb warmer resistor is almost identical to the all set it flashes at start up. I took the resistor out once and it ohm'd out fine and if I push the connectors together and hold the wires so they can't slide it will be ok until it breaks connection again. My last resort it to pull the pins out of the connector and try to tighten them up. If that doesn't work I'll break down and buy a new one. My dealer told me that an overheating sled gets priority in the diagnostic system so if you do overheat it will blink the continuous fast even if there are other faults.

They are hard to come by. Most places online say discontinued part. I'm wondering if you can use the one for the grips
