How do I change the fuel filter?

The hose is short enough that I can't pull it out as seen here this http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/2001-yamaha-venture-500-fuel-tank-assembly.html Do I have to cut the hose and get a new longer one and put it in it's place, attache the new filter and pull it backwards into the tank? Also is the clip (#5) needed, it looks like you would need a special tool to close a new clip. It's not one of those spring loaded, it just looks like a smooth collar that has been pressed togheter at factory.
 
If this is a 96 xt,
1. Remove seat
2. Remove the two nuts at the rear of the tank(#29)that secures it to the tunnel.
3. There's a sensor with a QD you'll have to separate.
4. Slide tank rearward just enough so the access port(pn #13)is just visable.
5. Remove the spring(pn #14)surrounding it. There'll be a fuel supply line going to this part.
6. Lift out(pn #13) and change filter.

I should have been more clear, it's a Venture 500 XL. The removal of the tank is not the issue but the fact that the hose is so short that you can't put it back after changing the filter. English isn't my first language but to pull the filter out of the tank (at the filler cap) I will have to cut the hose in the other end, bottom corner where it leads to the fuel pump. There is no assembly, the filter is just attached to the hose lying freely at the bottom of the tank.

That's not the problem, I can get it out, but not get it back in without getting a new longer hose and a new clip for the other end of the hose where it goes out of the tank at the bottom, but what kind of tool do you use to close such a clip? It's completely smooth, not like a standard clip which has a screw to tighten it.

In the link that you posted, which part number are you referring to? Your referring to pn #5....right. I'm not certain but isn't that one is crimped on?

Yes it's #5. I assume it's made that way, without parts sticking out because it has to be able to pass through the tank which a normal clip would not be able to do, the diameter is only 1 mm or so smaller than the hole in the tank. I thought you would need a special tool to press a new clip togheter over the hose.
 
On my 97 the filter can be changed through the filler opening as is. Hook it with a wire and then use some combination of tools like screwdrivers and long needle noses to turn it so the end comes through the opening. It will pull out just enough to get to the clamp and change it.
They really should have put a longer hose on it. On the earlier sleds, there is plenty of hose to pull the filter through the hole.
Possibly too much hose could interfere with the fuel gauge.

Pull the white plastic sleeve out of the filler opening first.

An easy trick I do:
Make sure the fuel level is below the pickup.
Remove the 2 10mm head bolts from the pickup fitting.
Slide the pickup out of the tank and remove the hose from it.
Now add a piece of 1/4" hose (any kind) with a straight barbed connector.
You can now push the hose back into the tank and remove the filter from the gas cap opening.
Change the filter, pull the hose back in with the piece you added, remove it and reassemble.
Change the filter when the air box is off for carb cleaning and it's less than a 5 minute job!
There are no special tools required, just a 10mm socket, pliers & screwdriver. The clips are not crimped special, just a smooth spring clamp.

Thanks for the tip. Worked well, I agree PZ1 though why didn't they just make it 100 mm longer, what were they thinking.
