New belt questions

I put a new Gates belt on my 1997 venture 600 twin, and now the sled is very snappy down low, but it tachs up too high. At 25 mph I am turning almost 7000 rpms.

Belt is not slipping, and is actually cold to the touch. It almost feels like the secondary is not shifting. put the old belt back on and all is well.

Maybe the belt is a little different in length or width. Where is it on the secondary? And how much belt deflection?
 
I've posted about this before and some folks dont believe me, but you are always better off buying an OEM belt. A lot of times OEM is less expensive than aftermarket as well. The problem with aftermarket belts is that the tolerances are all over the map and almost never fit with the clutches set to oem specs. From what you describe, it would seem you would need to add a shim to your secondary as the belt deflection is too tight. The problem with making adjustments to make the aftermarket belts work is that your clutching isnt going to work 100% like it would with an OEM belt... It will work but you will be sacrificing some power and efficientcy some where.

x2^^^. I tried the oem Yamaha belt this year and it has been way better than the aftermarket belt I had last year that was more than twice the money.
 
Get a carslile ultimax xs805. It exceeds oem in all performance factors. Doesn't slip hardly at all, low dust no squeal and cooler clutches. My clutching is spot on, I can throw on my backup oem belt and my peak rpm's will climb.
 
Before you installed it did you scrub it clean. With dawn dish soap and let it dry for a day? Also scotch brite your sheathes and get really clean? Then break in the belt?

I think you are right. The new Yamaha belt responds the same way the gates belt did. Its reving too high for the given speed.

Shims needed?

Whats a good setting for the secondary spring?

I think most here will tell you to go OEM due to thier consistancy in construction/material but even they're known to change...

or tune to the type of belt you're using and buy more than one.

As others have mentioned - wash the new belt/s with soap and water and let dry before installing.
 
Did you buy the sled used and is this the first time you put a new belt on? If so, possibly the previous owner had adjusted the secondary width for the worn belt and now it needs to be reshimmed for the new belt.
