Yamaha EF1000is inverter generator won't start

I have had this new Yamaha generator sitting on a shelf for several years. I have put in oil and gasoline (both brand new), followed the starting instructions, and pulled the cord. It won't start. Could the spark plug or something else have gone bad just from sitting on the shelf?

they are usually tested at the factory. sounds like it needs the carb pulled and cleaned. as i buy nos sleds that sat in the crate for years, this has pretty much had to happen to every carbd sled i have ever bought.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Clean the carb.
