New member here. Reading through the posts I'm at the right place. I picked up a 2002 Viper a few weeks back from a "get it out of my yard" situation. I figured the worst situation would be it would be a good parts sled. Sitting for 6 years but all in all decent shape. The saving grace i think is it was non ethanol gas in it. a spray bottle shot of gas in the carbs and it started right up, idled and seemed to run the way it should. So now the questions. It had SLP pipes on it with a can which I have taken off and I found the original OEM exhaust on Ebay. I want it to be a dependable trail sled and not so concerned with top end speed so is the way to go with the factory settings on the carbs and the clutching or is there a better set up than that? Don't get me wrong, I would like it to GO but prefer it not be on the end of a tow rope behind my buddies E-tec. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the site! Loads of information here and a lot of people willing to help. I personally think factory settings are the way to go. My srx is all stock with factory settings and it runs flawless on the trail! I'm sure some of the guys here will be able to tell you of a good trail setup though. Don't worry, if anybody will be doing the towing it will be you! Those etecs don't last too long;)!
 
Thanks for the info. I had a 2001 srx. The thing flew but I couldn't take the ride so I went to a RX1. I'm hoping to get this viper to handle better than both of them.
 
Motor is on my bench. Pressure washed 15 years of grease and i'm in the process of replacing all the bearing and seals in the running gear. I've got the jack shaft out and I noticed the new replacement bearing I bought for the chain case has a seal on both sides of the bearing and the one I took out only has a seal on one side. My question is can I just put the new bearing in with the seal on both sides or do you take the seal off one side of the bearing or do I have the wrong bearing? Thanks in advance.
 
You can take either side off. Just be sure to put side you took the seal off of facing into the chain case...same as how you found the old one. This is so the bearing will get lubed easier being at the top of the chaincase.
 
You can leave both seals in to keep the dirt out. Yamaha has the seal to the inside of the case and the open side towards the tunnel.
 
There is a separate oil seal for that concept, also keeps your oil in the case lol, but the little bit of dirt that builds up over a season of riding won't hurt. As long as you change the oil and clean inside annually you'll be fine..really you could leave both sides on if you want, the oil will still get behind the seal...

I would hope it was jetted for those SLP pipes. Installing the stocker will necessitate jetting down closer to factory settings. Except for mid-range setting. Most experienced viper guys on TY can get you closer with jetting that won't leave you with a burn down.
