leaking fluid?

well I was looking at my motor today and noticed what looked to be some sort of fluid had been leaking. can anyone verify this? or what is it? it is on the bottom half of the motor and on the belly pan. it was running good at the end of this past snowmobile season 2003 Yamaha viper

Looks like exhaust blow back or leaking from the power valve towers,happens all the time and unless your diligent in using degreaser to keep the front of the engine cleaned off it will build up year after year.
 
there are drains on the bottom of each power valve. Clean your valves and as long as they are off, clean that too. Just be sure to keep the water out of the engine while the valves are off... :)

thank you very much! what would be the best way to clean the valves? and to clean the front, would I be fine to use a degreaser to clean it?
 
I use brake cleaner, spray it on,let it soak for about 10 seconds or so,not much longer because it evaporates quickly,and hose it off. If the grease is really thick or stubborn use a fine scotchbrite pad,nothing too aggressive ,and loosen it up.

also, is there anything I need to know before I take the power valves off?
 
Take note of which way the cutout of the valve faces when you take them out and when you put them back in use a small dab of never seize or lube on the cable end before you slide it back into the end of the valve.

you use break cleaner on the valve? or the front of the engine..?
 
Greasy oily spots on the engine. The valves I usually scrape them off with a razor blade or scraper blade. I used to soak them in carb cleaner or some such stuff but I found that rarely did much. I still ended up scraping the carbon deposits off.

well I took the valves out and cleaned them. and I also found these 2 nicks in the center powervalve. am I still fine to use it?
