new pistons or not

I decided to tear into the srx and got to measuring. The pistons are .005" out of spec. I changed rings last year but I cant remember if I measured the pistons or not. I am guessing I just threw the rings in and went. Anyway would I be pushing it to put these back in for this year or should I get new? My sled funds are getting low. I would probably put on about 6-800 miles roughly this year at minimum depending on snow. They don't look too bad, a few scuffs. I will put new in if I have to I just don't want to spend the money right now unless I need to.IMG_20150824_080856617[1].jpg
 
Thanks guys. Seems to me you should get more than that out of a set of pistons. Then again I have no idea what happened in the first 3800 miles of the sled or if that is the true mileage.
 
I'm no expert by any means but it looks like there's chatter marks on the skirts where the pistons have been rattling in the bore.I read a post about this last year and noticed those same marks on an old piston I have,and I see what looks like it on yours.The two outside ones appear to be the worst ones and .005" doesn't seem like much wear on the pistons.It might be worth your while to mic the bores of the cylinders while the engine is apart.
 
I used a dial caliper to measure. I do not have a micrometer that big yet. The bores measure good. The pistons do have scratches on them.
 
I am going to get new oem pistons. Would it be ok to use the rings I have if I put them back in where they were? I just put new oem rings in last year and put about 600 miles on them. Not trying to cut corners but don't want to spend the extra dollars if these would be perfectly fine. I don't think it would be a problem but I don't have a lot of experience with the 2 stroke motor yet. What do you guys think?
 
You should be fine reusing the rings but use the cylinders should be deglazed before you reassemble them.I've asked the question before and got several opinions on how to do this,some guys use a fine hone but if you don't have one use something like a Scotchbrite pad and a lubricating oil like WD-40,it'll help the rings re seat.

Ok. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I will lightly hone them again. I think I figured out a problem that could have contributed to my problem. I just took the thermostat out and it was bent and stuck wide open. With all the research I have done so far it seems that would cause the engine to not warm up properly. I am guessing the pistons were warming and expanding faster than the cylinders causing the clearance to tighten. Does that seem logical?
 
Yes that sure could be the root cause of your issue,I have seen a few threads about people not running a t-stat and having problems and with yours stuck open your basically in the same situation.
 
I would also reuse the rings. Hone cyls and double check your ring end gap and you should be golden. Fix that stat
