amen to the last 2 posts, kinda puts everything in perspective.
2-stroke snowmobiles (some of the most efficient 2-stroke engines of all time) are gona be outlawed in the next couple years, when like you say, lawnmower puts out as much pollution mowing the lawn as the sled does in a whole day, and every saturday morning, the legions are out mowing, every lawn across america

This is getting out of control with the whole noise issues on snowmobiles, and its the cross country skiers that are making all the noise about it. I got into an argument with a TREE HUGGER this past summer. He was telling me that snowmobiles ruin the enviroment, and killing the ecosystem in the lakes, blah blah blah!!!!!!!!!!!!! So just being the jack *** that I am around thoes people I told him that the wax that he puts on his skis in the winter time kills somthing in the ground that helps the enviorment, which is most likly untrue. THAT PISSED HIM OFF!!! I just throw it right back at them. Everyone can agree that snowmobiling is an addiction. Its a great sport that brings in TONS of money for the areas that have good trail systems. If I choose to spend thousands of dollars on performance parts for my sled then that is my bussiness. I should not have JOHNNY LAW sitting there and writing out a ticket because I choose to enjoy my passsion for snowmobiling. But I have also been told, and this was by a cop, to take the ticket to court. The chances of them winning are slim to non if you ask the right questions. I tell ya what though, I am just waiting for them to show up on a race night.

exhaust
Guys,
An comparison of snowmobiles with modified exhaust to harleys is sort of pathetic. Last time I checked, local towns didnt close down streets to traffic because of Harleys!
If trails were not on private land or went thru towns to get gas, I would be the first to put a silencer on my srx! I wouldnt care if the pipes are illegal and would be happy to pay the fine. Closing my favorite trail down, now thats a different story..............
At least most guys with the "obnoxious" pipes only ride the "river" or the "lake" because they'll at least be able to enjoy those areas for their entre lives.
Used to have bender pipes on the Sx, but even those got me in trouble.........

Know who lives along the river? Voters. Usually wealthy influential voters that see all snowmobilers as being just like the ones that invade the quiet solitude of their home on a regular basis by blasting by at inappropriate speeds at all times of day and night. I'm playing devils advocate here but you better believe that's exactly the way they think, and you can expect very little sympathy from them if our sport is threatened by politicians with an agenda or a tree hugger out to save us from ourselves by restricting or eliminating entirely our right to enjoy the outdoors on these machines. Given the choice of a quiet snowmobile or no snowmobile I'll vote quiet snowmobile every time.

Quiet is fine, but how quiet does it need to be. Wisconsins new laws are so strict, that most stock artic cats can't meet the requirements. And do you think these people are going to stop at this, hell no they won't. They don't have to hear you, see you, or smell you, as long as they know you're there having fun they are going to want to stop you. After all, you need to be as miserable as them. And why was everything fine up untill now, sleds were louder 10 years ago!

You said a 1000 fine or I am going to impound his sled ? He does not decide what the fine is going tobe a judge does that did you check to see what max fine would be ? a 1000 dollar fine or impound the sled one has nothing to do with the other your sled would be impounded for evidents not because you didnt or did pay a fine sorry smell fishy even if he did pick you at 2 miles away with hornograph he still has to id that sled as making that noise in court he has to say it was a blu Yamaha srx (not a Blu pol) and even what you were wearing also how long were in the shop till he got there he had to of follwed you there if you were there long at all he should have been able to catch you

Just MHO ... It is easier to quiet down the tree huggers who are complaining by doing something about loud sleds. And the truth is, if they start shutting down trails, then they win. And it's easier to shut down trails than roads.
RE the Harleys. I agree 100%. These guys are running open headers. Try running open headers on a car and see how far you get. Let's do a little math ... 88 cubic inch Harley motor = 44 cubic inches per cyl. 44 * 8 cyls = 352 ci. Hmmm ... so the displacement of a Harley cyl is equal to that of a SB Chevy. Think about that. Why can they run open headers and the SBC or SBF cannot?
RE: outlawing 2 strokes. They may outlaw the SALE of them, but I doubt if they'll ever outlaw the USE of them.
Final note: LOUD SLEDS -- Ya know something? It really doesn't have to be that loud. My SRX at full throttle is PLENTY loud. Gives me a hard on every time I hear it. I agree that "to each his own", but if LOUD sleds are going to create problems for the rest of us, then please, QUIET THEM DOWN - or you won't be riding at all!
