Honing nikasil

Wondering what peoples thoughts are on honing nikasil cylinders. I've heard mixed opinions on whether your supposed to or not. I always have... 20 or 30 seconds to de-glaze and get the cross hatch back. I've never had a problem but I've HEARD you can chip the coating around the ports... Thoughts??

I've never had any problems. I always hone mine when rebuilding a motor. Or re-ringing it

What grit and type of hone do you use? Ball type or stone?

Haucks just honed mine today and they look great!

Top 2-stroke engine builders say honing a nikasil cylinder is a no-no. The coating is only .002-,003 thick.

A very controversial subject. Ball hones works great in my opinion @320 grit. They dont remove any material that you could measure so the plating thickness is not a consideration. You run the hone up and down the cylinder for 8 -10 seconds or so with trans fluid. We are creating a rough surface so the rings wear and break in. Legend has it that someone once chipped a port. And that legend lives on.... and is repeated forever.
