I have a 1997 Yamaha vmax sx 600 twin that act's like it's hitting a rev limiter at 5500 rpms its all stock except for the can that was on it when I got. It ran fine until now. Thanks for any info.

You mean at WOT it wont shift out ... 5500 rpm max? I would start to check clutch parts, warn center bushings, rollers or weights.

X2. ALso check your torrs. Sometimes hard to judge when your hitting that limit just running it on a stand and looking at it. Torrs will be your throttle cable slack. It needs lots of slack.

x3. I had that happen on my 600 twin. I thought at first I blew it up. Ended up being the clutch bushings worn. From what I hear the twins were hard on clutch bushings. Another possible thing to check would be make sure there is no blockage in the air box or the exhaust. Mice like to build nests in there.

The tors is disconnected and the primary was just completely rebuilt and carbs have been cleaned. I think I'll tear into the secondary tonight. A guy down the road had the same sled foe years and said that maybe there's to much air flow through the can he had the same problem
Its the clutches..something is not allowing them to shift out.
you do realize that sled is equipped with a throttle position sensor? could be something is messed up with that switch, its out of adjustment, or its unplugged. the wiring does feed directly into the cdi box and can create the problem your having. are you getting the self diagnosis flash from the dash on startup? is it throwing any codes?

Yes I know about the tps and the temp flashes 1 long and 3 short until the sled is warmed up then it goes off

I have been riding since I was 12 and have only had Yamaha and this is the first time I had a problem that has got me stumped.
interesting. my 97 sx simply flashes 3 quick on startup, then it fades out, like its supposed to based on the design.
if yours is flashing 1 long and 3 shorts until the sled warms up, that aint right, should go out in about 1.5 seconds, mine does, unless your throwing a code. what you describe is a code for the temp sensor and it might possibly be misconstrued for another code like the tps.
if your primary is fresh, as you stated, you have other problems. your secondary will not make the engine sound like its hitting a rev limiter, its in the electrical, thats how it works. adding a can, increasing air flow, whatever, will not affect nor create your conditions.
i, myself, have been running yamahas since about your age if not before, and thats been way over 40 years ago. take advise for what its worth and try it with open eyes.

Alright I'll look into the electrical stuff tomorrow and see what I can find. Do you know what the tps setting should be? It look's like someone has adjusted it before because it no longer has the tamper proof screws. And thanks for the advice
Very well could be.. its much easier to diagnose when you can actually stand by the sled.

Alright I got it figured out. And as I was going through the wires I found that the guy I got the sled from tried to wire the new heated grips into the tps unit which explains why they didn't work. Thank for all the help guys...

Yeah that's a new one for me to. As long as the grips where off it had good rpms but when turned on they still didn't work and rpms would drop and hesitate. No that it's fixed right I don't have any problems and I hooked the grips up the right way

Its amazing what some people do to their sleds. I found a few weird surprises going through the viper when I got it.

Yeah I know what you mean my dad once bought an 800 cat that ran great for about two weeks then it blew that's when we discovered it had 3 different size pistons.
