Bought two triples, stored for 4 years- advice?

Also how to fix the speedo cable? Kind of the last piece of this puzzle but still- do I need an entirely new cable or can you get the end?
Anybody have a picture how the speedo cable is supposed to look attached? Both mine are broken so I don't know what a good one looks like...
 
I don't ever remember seeing just the cable insert available,I would almost hazard a guess you'll have to buy the whole thing. I'm not sure what it is you need a picture of for the speedo cable. It threads onto the drive housing on the axle then snakes up to the speedo itself. Mine is in pieces so I don't have any pics to show you but it's pretty straight forward.

Bearing in the chain case should be good but if you replace one why not both.
As for speedometer cable the cable itself should be good what you need is the little cable that goes into the drive shaft it's about an inch long easy to find you can get one out of any sled. A good place to look would be a snowmobile salavage yard.
 
Well I got into the carbs on the 600 today. Cleaned them out nice, got them back in, fresh fuel, and no start. Pulled enough times to realize something wasnt right. Was thinking maybe the carbs didn't get enough prime. Later, after I called it a day, I remembered there is little screens in the carb under the floats. Didn't clean those, I forgot.. There was green goo inside, screens are probably stopped up with it.
Looks like I'm going back into the carbs. Won't make that mistake again on the srx!

Bearing parts are on order, waiting for those before I start that project.
 
Wow been almost a month since I updated this post. I've been busy (not snowmobiling unfortunately) but, I did get both sleds running and starting reliably now. Took the 600 out for a quick tip down the driveway. Clutch seemed to be engaging too high and pretty sure it's got a blown exhaust donut (loud, sounded piped but stock exhaust)
The 700 goes forward and backward, I'm sure it'll take a few rides to get some little things ironed out but no snow!

I'm bringing both sleds to a local small engine/power sports repair guy. For the money he told me to change out tw drive bearings, it's worth it to me on a job where I'd be crawling on a cold floor and still not totally sure what I was doing. He's got a stand and everything so that makes it much easier. Plus he's done a few. Reasonable guy to deal with.

I can't believe the weather... Last year this time the trails had been groomed and were open for riding! My luck I had to buy sleds on an El Niño year.

Oh! Realized I haven't got any pictures yet. I'll get some tomorrow.

Yeah, my bad guys. Last time I bought a sled the trails here weren't ready till mid January... I must be cursed.

Although I gotta say, it's kinda nice not being on snowshoes and slogging through knee deep snow all day. It's coming though. I do maple tubing installations, so in the woods every single day. At least we can still work with the ground not frozen, the poor loggers can't do anything with all this mud.
 
Well time for another update I guess.
Both sleds have had the drive bearing replaced, the SRX got both sides and the jackshaft bearing done. Both sleds had some idler wheel bearings replaced, and I just got the speedo drives installed and working. This weekend we went to a spaghetti ride in, first ride of the year! Trails in the woods were poor at best. The railroad bed was alright. Not much riding is gonna happen till we get some more snow though.
 
I did have another tech question though.
The SX600 has a backfire issue. It wants to bog on the low end when not fully warmed up, occasionally wants to backfire. After it gets warmed up, it runs good.
Halfway into our ride, it began acting up, popping and wanting to backfire when riding slow. The problem appears to go away if you ride more aggressively (more throttle off\on)

Suggestions?
Really don't want a burndown at this point in the season. When we have snow, I want to be riding not repairing.
 
dirty pilots, happened to me this weekend. PTO cyl would drop out at idle and would back fire when going slow or starting off. pilot was not completely clogged but like 75%. when i was at half throttle and above it was fine because i was on the needle or main jet . just like your situation.

Hmm I did go through the carbs twice before running it,and drained the old fuel and installed a new filter. But since I've do e it twice third time is no big deal!

I know when I had my 1999 srx the pilot jets were clogged every year. The rest of the carbs and jets could be fine, pilot jets would be all stopped up. Didn't expect it so soon but maybe I missed something.

what was the temp out while you where running? when it is warm out, heated carbs should be turned off. i know the sx venture was running boggy this weekend when i exercised it as it was 2 celcius and the under hood temps would rise when i was riding slow and it would bog on a throttle snap untill i got it rolling at higher speeds.

I thought maybe the temperature was a factor, but didn't want to discount it as such an easy fix and have the same issue next time we're able to ride. It was probably 32-34 Degrees F, and the snow conditions were low and hard packed/borderline icy so not a ton of snow getting thrown up on the heat exchangers.
And now that you mention it, I think I did leave the heated carbs ON.
Pretty sure the SRX had them on as well but that has a bigger radiator system than the sx600 so it may not have suffered.

At this point it's warm out, and we barely have enough snow to test ride, so I'll probably go through the carbs anyways just for something to do.
