well its that time of year again and thoughts turn to my SRX again. After a nice fogging in the Spring, time to fire up the Beast again....a lot of smoke rising and the sweet smell of 2 stroke oil
So decided to start with re-ringing and started to tear things down.Pistons all look great and cylinders look awesome as well. Now last season I was worried about oil dripping down to my floor from my sled.Everyone told me to check all my oil lines which I did and could not find a leak.Well after removing the exhaust pipes and power valves,I have a good chance to look down and the belly pan was full of oil.It happens to be my PV's really leak oil at start ups and the oil finds a way out and drips out to the floor. So I replaced all 3 seals with new hoping this will stop the issue.
Back to re-ringing for a minute..specs say to check ring end gap at .014 to .022 inch.Just tried sliding one ring into a cylinder ands I get .018 inch. Now if they all measure that way..then I would be good to install.BUT do some of you go with the larger gap or am I safe at .018 inch ?
So got to do regular stuff like clean carbs, adjust PV's,check drive bearings and re-pack. Also going to remove 48 studs from the track. From 144 to 96 studs saving some weight and rotating mass.
Going to rebuild the clutch's with all new bushings as well and start with a new belt this season. So I can Break the motor in and belt at the same time..then will ride it like I STOLE IT....
And of course go thru the skid bearings and check it all out.Might be a while until we get snow, but will be ahead of the game this season.
This is all for now, will pop in once in a while to see how things are going....

I'm interested in the ring gap as well. I'm going to be putting mine together very soon. I have brand new rings, and they are right at .020/.021 (book says .022 is max) I was expecting them to be tighter...

Good to see ya back around blue!! I would run the rings as long as they are in spec, thats what spec is for. I will be re-ringing anitas viper next weekend so will be doing the same.

Make sure you measure ring about 10mm down the cylinger. I use piston to push it down nice and level about 10mm.

Hello Doug,
You are putting new rings in that sld already? It seems like you just rebuilt the engine. How many miles do you have on it since the rebuild? I much prefer the ring end gap to be closer to the small side of the spec., less blowby.

Are the cylinders tapered???
I was checking with the rings much deeper. I did square up with pistons.

yes I do know that one does have to push the rings down and take a measurement.

Hey Jim how is it going??I have well over 3000 miles on the last set of rings, just keeping her fresh.Don't know what I meaured the gap at last time, but pistons really don't have much in the way of blowby...will stick to the lower end of the specs.

Hello Super1c..that was my intent pushing ring down and square to measure gaps...

Just checked my records. The SRX was rebuilt back in 2010 with 6450 miles on it. This time around it has 11,299 miles on it.So that is around 4849 miles on the last rings .Thought it best to change rings now to refresh......

well its all done deal,SRX all ready for the snow.Re-ringed her,re-built primary clutch, new base gasket, head gaskets, oil seals for pv,s..all greased up. Nice that the PV's don't leak any oil anymore all over the exhaust... Some snow called for this week with -14C by Thursday Night.Gonna be a while yet I guess until we get a blast of the white stuff.
