Hi guys i recently picked up a 96 Vmax 600 MM and was just wondering what people thought of the sled. It has been modified to fit a 1-3/4 paddle on it as well as a liquid temp gauge. I'd appreciate any info!

Great sleds but I would suggest drop brackets if you plan on a lot of off trail riding.

Mine always got stuck until I put them on.

It already has a lowering bracket on it! as well as primary drive dropped one tooth to fit bigger track

Haha well i wouldn't expect high fuel economy from an older 2 stroke ! Any known issues with the motor?

When I had mine I averaged about 8-10 mpg witch isn't all that bad considering how heavy they are.

Throw on a thin head gasket and reed spacers and it'll wake that sled up alot.

That sled should be about 94-97 hp. The only bad I know of is the twins wear out the clutch faster do to bad harmonics.

There's lots of great setups over in the tech section lots of good info.

It was dropped down to 8 tooth drivers and it has an 1 & 3/4 inch track? I dropped to 8 toothers w/ a 1.5 track and STILL had to trim the track by 1/4 inch where the track and tunnel coolers intersected.

I could be mistaken it could be an 1.5 inch with dropped primary drive as well it has suspension remounted on drop brackets unfortunately i dont have any pictures at this time. I do know that i have no clearance issues tho sled runs like a top

Sled was previously owned by a mechanic so this was all done before i picked the sled up (only paid 800$). It does need some cosmetic work as hood has been cracked and been fixed with fibre glass (i dont like the way it looks) so i will most likely look for a used Vmax hood to replace it with

Are there any performance upgrades worth doing to the sled? I've been doing some reading and learned about the thicker head gasket being used on the 96's. Is it worth putting a thinner gasket in? Ive also read about reed spacers for the sled what are the pros and cons of these upgrades?

Thin gasket mean higher compression more power but with it you must run 93 octane or better. Reed spacer or ( reed stopper notch easy to do info in tech section) means increased throttle response. Both of these together really make a difference you will notice.
A good clutch setup will help but not needed depends on what type of riding you do.
If you can find a set of Yamaha gyt pipes they will add a few hp as well.
Head gasket and reed spacers definitely worth it.

I did the 95 (thinner) head gasket and V-Force reeds on my 96 XT as well as jetting and clutching and it was WELL worth it.
It really brought it to life. Before this my wifes stock 95 LE would beat it from a dead stop.
I have seen no negatives with my upgrades. The engine is stronger and more responsive and the mileage went up.Win/Win

Finding as set of the old V-force reeds for a 94-96 twin maybe a very hard thing to do these days since they stop making them 10 or so years ago.

PS: I have always run 87 octane in both my 95 and 96 for 20 years now without one single problem. Same compression ratio in both sleds. My XT should hit the 10,000 mile mark this winter as it is only 700 mile short now.

Definitely considering putting in the head gasket and reed spacers potentially new reeds as well. Where is a good place to get parts for yammy's first one here.
